Anybody recognize this tranny?
« on: November 09, 2013, 07:22:20 pm »
I thought I would draw on the experience of those here who have maybe seen this style of transformer, I got it in a modest pile of stuff I bought from an individual amp builder who quit the endeavor. It is pretty large. This was a guy who liked BIG amps, for bass. Because the thickest wires are both twisted pairs and fattish, I of course suspect it is power, not output. I can eventually figure out the windings but I am posting here in case anyone has seen such a thing before and might be able to say "oh, that's a .....". TIA!

He couldn't tell you what it was?

So many windings it seems like it should be a PT, but you never know. Checking continuity should help clear it up.

The thing is huge, though. IMO one would be comfortable estimating this as a 200 ma tranny. Quad 6550, did VOX make amps that powerful?

Again, I'm just looking for some visual recognition. I can certainly play with it and discern the windings through known methods. But it does have some unusual, shall we say, color coding on the wires. Seems like it would have to be for a hybrid amp...+/- supply for a solid-state front end AND considerable power for a multi-tube output section.  Even then...awful lot of wires.

I.m.o I think thas this transformer is wired by someone with very much different wire colors in stock.
Take the caps off and look what you see then!
