Can an amp's tone curve be tweaked
« on: November 12, 2013, 05:51:39 pm »
Call me crazy and here's why-

I have 2 Sunn amps, the 2000s and the latest Fender (Sunn) 300t. Both are smooth through the midrange. I have a Traynor YBA-3A Super , which is great , but a bit strong for me through its midrange

Would there be any easy part swaps to calm the midrange? Without EQ's. I don't use any of the expanders , on the front panel, because they push out midrange more.

Thanks

But wouldn't it take EQ to change the midrange?

Probably not without changing the tone circuit of the Traynor to match the Sunn. If that didn't get it, you could try a bridged-T filter to scoop out midrange, but it would take a lot of experimentation to find the parts value that give the response you're looking for.

The expanders look like they change the amount of feedback at highs and lows, apart from the tone controls, which should cut midrange if you turn them up. That doesn't happen with your amp?

Answers-

On the Eq-  I guess but I was hoping there was a way by tweaking caps, if possible

Tone Circuit change- that's what I was hoping for. I wonder how hard it would be to intall a parametric so I could dial in the right frequency to cut

Expanders-  The treble does make things brighter but brittle, The bass enhancer makes it more boomy, the Presence raises a frequency above where it needs help. This amp needs help around the 800- to 1k area.
