I've wanted a 15" alnico speaker for a few years but supposedly nobody makes a good 1 any more except Eminence and theirs is 150w ceramic. Although it is said to sound very good I can't see putting a 150w speaker in a 15-20w amp, or even a 40-50w amp.

I talked with David at Tone Quest Report mag last week and he told me about this speaker, WGS, G15A ribbed cone, 75w.

Well Merry Christmas to you. I think you're gonna love it. I've had a love for 15" alnicos since '68 when I bought a brand new Ampeg Gemini II with 15" Jensen Concert Series alnico. Bottom end was strong and well defined. The overall sound was very warm. It was a good match for that amp.

I currently have an Eminence 15" Big Ben ceramic. Bottom is strong on it too, but it's not as warm sounding as I remember the old Jensen.

Bet you gotta do a cab project now. Have fun...

I believe what your saying about a good bottom end and warm. SRV was playing BF SR's 4x10" and BF Vibroverb 1x15" on stage together. (Yes his tech upped the PT and OT on both amps but still the 2 different sized speakers was his choice.)  

Dave at TQR over the years has bought a LOT of old amps to review/revive with 15" speakers, including a few Ampegs, all with the old Jensons alnicos like you have. He/they really love them, but the old ones when they cranked them, to do the full low to high volume review, after ~15 to 30 minutes went south. (He just gets them reconed.)

I have a single 15" cab I bought from Mojo several years ago that I'll use for now.

I have a good friend (he started out at 1st as a carpenter, then contractor, now custom cabinet maker and has a full wood working shop in his home) from church that I've know for 20+ years and have worked for as a carpenter that will make a few cabs for me this winter or he'll let me use his shop.

FWIW, another alternative: I've been very happy with vintage Altec's, EV's, & Jensen's (+1 sluckey), available on eBay for reasonable price.

the only 15" i have is in a marshall basketweave cab. it's a Celestion greenback. 15 ohms, 100W.
i don't really like it for guitar but for bass it's fine. i guess i would like an alnico better for guitar.

Hey,, if that thing turns out to just be too brown, or sounds too alnico'y,,,,,I'll gladly take it off your hands

I have been quite impressed with everything I have played from WGS. I have a 12" Retro 30 ( a variant of their Veteran 30 which is their take on the Celestion Vintage 30) in a 1x12 cabinet that I like very much. I have four WGS Reaper 30 speakers (their Celestion G12H30 clone) in an inexpensive Crate 4x12 cabinet. Alongside it I have a Soldano 4x12 cabinet with real Celestion G12H30 speakers. Once the Reapers were broken in I could not tell the difference between them and the real deal G12H30 speakers. As the WGS speakers have aged they sound even better. If I could only play or keep one of the cabinets I'd keep the Crate/WGS and sell the Soldano/Celestion.

Yeah I saw that in your 5E5 A thread. A lot of guys say they make great speakers.

If you buy 1 let us know what you think. I'm partial to alnico speakers but ceramics can sound just as good or better.

I like Alnico a lot too but sheesh the price is going up up up on them.

Yeah they're costly alright. $250 to $300 for the 1's I've bought .

I did just buy a lower wattage 12" hemp cone alnico from Tubby tone that was under $200(?) for a 5E3/5G9 type amp.
