chart showing proper 5e3 voltages
« on: April 09, 2014, 02:56:16 pm »
Hi, I was wondering if there is a chart that lists the correct voltages that I should be reading when checking my 5e3 now that I have it working.I mean the voltages at the rectifier ,power tubes and pre amp pins.Also the voltages that are read at the output and power transformers.I did try to do a search ,but no results.I really wasn't sure how to phrase my search question  thanks Alan

Alan 53, man I am sorry but there is no such thing.  It is strange that the most DIY built amp there is and no known voltages.
Here is a link: http://el34world.com/charts/valve/ValveDataIndex.php
You can look and see what others have posted as voltages.  You can also post yours here and you can get feedback as to if you are in the ballpark.  The tubes themselves need to operate at a certain voltage for the amp and many know the general area.

Here are the voltages for my 5E3. The iron came from a Deluxe Reverb Reissue so the voltages may be a little higher than the original '50s amp.

A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

This is the exact layout, schematic and voltages I was working towards.  Mine ended up almost the same and I am very happy with the amp and it had proven to be very durable and kind to tubes.

So it is a +1 on this.

Hi, I was wondering if there is a chart that lists the correct voltages that I should be reading when checking my 5e3 ...

Last tidbit of info:
You'll notice the original Fender 5E3 Deluxe layout and schematic does not include voltages. In general, you would get a guide to overall voltages from the original 5C3 Deluxe layout and schematic instead. This gives clues to output stage voltages, but would not help as much from preamp voltages due to the different tubes used.

Overall, you'd expect higher voltages in your clone amp today, because higher wall voltage with the exact same power transformer will give higher supply voltages. That said, voltages could be +/-20% (maybe more) and be considered "the same" as any voltage indicated on the schematic or a chart.

I couldn't find what the original transformers were for the 5e3, or the 5c3, any one have data?

I haven't seen it either. I know I looked at the transformer #'s on my '55 Tremolux when I had it (they would have been the same as that year's Deluxe), but I don't recall the numbers.

They would have been 4- or 5-digit Triad part #'s, yet very likely different from the part numbers in Triad's catalogs for those years as they were made to go in Fender's amps. Some Fender schematics have the part numbers listed (like this 5F8 Twin) but Fender didn't put them on the Deluxe schematics. They may have been similar to the 5G9 Tremolux transformers, or not.

Either way, your best guide is probably the few schematics/layouts which do include voltages, and you can work backwards from there.

From Dave Funk's "Tube Amp Workbook."

5E9-A = PT 8160, OT 108, 8ohm. (list's 14684 for a choke, must be mis-print as this amp has no choke.)

5G9    = PT 8160, OT 108, 8ohm, choke 14684.

6G9    = PT 125P6A, OT 45217, 8ohm, choke 125C1A.

No info for PT/OT for Deluxe 5B,C,D,E3 and 5E9.

From Gerald Weber's "Tube Amp Talk for the Guitarist and Tech."

No info for 5E9 and 5E9-A.

Same info as above for 5G9 and 6G9

No info for PT/OT for Deluxe 5B,C,D,E3.

From Dave Funk's "Tube Amp Workbook."

Since you have Dave Funk's book, look at the Fender schematics. The numbers in the chart are simply compiled from information found printed right on the schematic.

Ok, no 5E9 schemo.

5E9-A schemo and layout no PT/OT #'s. Lists 395dcv at CT/1st filter cap, 370dcv for screens, with a 5U4GA on layout.

5G9 schemo and layout no PT/OT #'s. Lists 370dcv at CT/1st filter cap, 368dcv after choke for screens, with a 5U4GB on layout.

One other thing, in the Weber book on the layout there's B+dcv written in on the 5C3.

360dcv CT/1st filter cap, after a 10K B+ dropping R 308dcv for the screens. Then after another 10K dropping R 280dcv for the PI.
