Joke of the day - a sad amp tech joke
« on: May 15, 2014, 06:58:44 am »
Ok, this is not a joke
I saw this post on Facebook

It's hard to believe there are actually people out there that call themselves techs and that people actually take vintage amps to these people.
The tech told this guy all it needed was a 3 prong power cord

I don't blame Charles the amp owner, he is just going along with what the amp tech told him

What's wrong with this picture?

You don't have to graduate from any school, but you do have to understand some basic electronics.

A school, is not gonna teach you what needs to be serviced in a Vintage fender amp.

Obviously, the tech that had that Deluxe does not know how to work on vintage amps

You are wrong all the way . You did not study in  electronic  to said that .

If you learn electronics in good school you are able to fix anything . Vintage Fender amp ( or other vintage amps )  need only little bit more than basic electronic knowledge . A electronic tech learn more than basic electronic

You could be able to fix vintage amp but you are not a tech .

Doug,
To answer your question without regard to tech school, I would say all the paper mallorys for starters.  I would assume the ground connections since the year and maybe the brass plate may need a tad of cleaning.  Like I said, I would have to have the amp.  I am sure the dropping resistors have drifted.  Who knows.  Just a look at the doghouse lets me know it was not checked out at all.  It still having the dual mallorys in the board is quite insane IMO.

Ed is not on the right track when he said a school is not gonna teach you what you needs to be serviced in Vintage amp .

I'll repeat ;

At any good electronic school you will learn electronics to be able to fix everything .  Vintage amps are so easy to fix for a beginner tech .

You do not need to be a electronic tech to be a good person and be happy in life. You can also do well repairs.

But you can not call yourself a tech.

Strattele52,
All that is just your opinion, it is not a fact or a universal truth
Opinions are like asses, everyone has one

To someone like me who has fixed hundreds of vintage amps and built my own line of customs amps, your opinion means nothing.

All you need to work on vintage amps is
A good basic knowledge of electronics
Common sense
and the most important part, experience

You cannot buy experience at a school

I did not say what you said.  We are having some communication problems.  What I said was "without regard to tech school" which means I am not arguing or debating anyones points in regards to school.  In other words, the original question had nothing to do with the topic of tech school.

The original question was what was wrong with the photo.  This original post actually agrees with you on the idea that people who do repairs in this way should not be called techs and people should not take their amps to them.

That being said, the majority of the old TV, Radio, Phono and yes old amps were not repaired by guys who never attended tech school.  Most of the older men I know who were repairmen learned on the job.  If this does not make them Technicians and that term is only reserved for school attendees, we would not have near the advancements in technology we have which is electronics.  There are those who Teach and those who Learn and both are studying Invention.  It is Invention that gives us a reason for School.

I took a basic electronics class in 7th grade  :l2:

20 years later I read 20 or more vintage tube amp books like Navy training manuals, etc
Then one by one by building my own amps on my kitchen table and working on vintage amps for friends and figuring things out from scratch, I built experience

"Tech" or "Techie" is short for "Technician".
World English Dictionary
technician (tɛkˈnɪʃən) [/t]
[/t]
n[/t]
1.[/t]a person skilled in mechanical or industrial techniques or in a particular technical field
2.[/t]a person employed in a laboratory, technical college, or scientific establishment to do practical work
3.[/t]a person having specific artistic or mechanical skill, esp if lacking original flair or genius

Hence, a person may be a tech and not have formal training, study, or paper credentials.  I recently read somewhere that mastery is coming to understand the theory behind the practice of an endeavor.  But the proof is in the pudding.  We have all come across credentialed professionals who appear to be a danger to themselves and others in their own chosen fields!

You guys would be amazed by 'techs' claiming themselves ''''techs'''' on this side of the pond...

I have seem 'techs' soldering a piece of cooper wire outside the case of a blown fuse :BangHead: :BangHead: :BangHead: :BangHead:  so the show could go on. THE SHOW MUST GO ON!!!!! :l2:  . No wonder it turned up in flames and massive repair was necessary.

Other guy replaced a back panel ON/OFF switch with a front panel switch - WITH AC WIRING OVER TONESTACK POTS. Guess what? Massive HUM!!!!!!

And things keep going down the hill....

Replace e-caps on 50's/60's/70's/80's amps? What for? Not needed... :cussing:

Very, very sad indeed...

They not only lack knowledge, they also lack experience (Are you experienced?) and humble to admit to themselves they know s@#t about what they are doing.

Unfortunately, they may put their customers life at risk with such attitude....

Experience may not work with a new problem you did not see before . Good electronics knowlege will . And good electronics knowlege will help you to go further.

For all , I did not say you can't fix amp if you don't learn electronic in school , I  said you can't call yourself a tech .

I can change oil in my car , air filters , battery , brakes , belts ,tires and some sensors  but I can't call myself a Mechanic.

Doug,
I left out the common things that you do without thinking about them like checking joints and cleaning pots.  Also, there is burnishing the input jacks and I use a dremel with a very soft brush to clean all the tip contacts.  Re-tension those and check them with a jack.  In that amp it believe it would be necessary to remove all the nuts to get at the brass plate and I'll bet the soldered chassis ground will break loose if you hit them with a screwdriver.  They do about half the time and I have never known why.  I guess they were not hot enough.  This is where a butane pin comes in handy.

When you think about it there is a lot of things that are just done, like the cleaning tube connections and re-tensioning and ever putting a little squeeze on the bear traps.  I never really thought about all the things I do to do a tune up.  Those blue caps would need to be replaced and kept for future use. :icon_biggrin:

Not really, I would never do such a things as it is rare to find one leaking, but I have found quite a few.

And yes Doug, I know who you are.  You sell parts for vintage amps, believe the economy is in ruin, have a garden and dogs, drink beer and make beer. Ride and sell bike parts.  You used to build amps till you wised up and moved to the Mountains.  Selling parts to amp builders is more profitable and not a frustrating as trying to explain to someone that there amp does not sound good because they cannot play. :l2:

Leo Fender was a bookeeper.

I have an Higher National Diploma (UK) in Electronics.

Leo knew more about amps than I ever will.

I do know the questions to ask and who to ask. That's Doug, HBP, PRR, Tubenit, GroundhogKen, to name a few, and the loads of wonderful generous people on this forum.

As far as the amp is concerned -
Some solder joints dont look great on cap board.
Sure you could change out the electrolytics, but there a lot of factors to consider. And no thanks I'm not starting a debate!

The cap legends are smeared - possibly from being damp?

So, Doug, whats the answer?
 :icon_biggrin:

Cheers, VB
everything will be ok
in the end.
if it's not ok,
it's not the end.

I think we need to alert the moderators that this newbe EL33, 34(?) whatever, is ALWAYS stirring the pot and causing trouble.  I think a ban is in order.

Hmmm.  Let's see, Leo Fender went to college as an accounting major.  ...

I never read Leo Fender calling himself a tech . Don't you ?

Leo was a radio repairman, who then founded K&F with Doc Kaufmann, which then became Fender. So he did have practical experience repairing (radio) amplifiers.

For the most part, he copied what was common and known to work well.

Uh, obviously you don't know who I am?

HINT: His name is EL34. This forum is hosted on EL34world.com...

I lived close to a couple of National Laboratories,  To qualify for a tech, You needed a Bachelors  Engineering Degree, and a 3.5 in college to get your foot in the door.  ...

Basically, you & I agree. The value of any education is what the individual makes of it, whether they acquired it in a classroom or through practical experience. Some people will always be stupid, even after obtaining advanced degrees.

I work in a field where the price of entry is a degree and several years experience (don't ask me how you're supposed to get experience if that's the minimum to start).

I have no degree. But I do have experience. More importantly, when I gained my experience, others around me recognized competence. So now I make a comfortable living because those with the authority to hire saw that I had the knowledge and ability they hope the minimum requirements they list on the job posting implies (but is not guaranteed to deliver).

aahh... thanks Doug. I'm still getting the hang of FB. :dontknow:

Boo-keeper/bee-keeper. Tomato/tomAto. :icon_biggrin:

I think Leo did understand the importance of crossing the streams......and invented the harmonic containment device as well.

On education, it certainly doesn't make you intelligent, it doesn't help you apply the information you have crammed into your brain. It is nothing without creativity, to paraphrase Einstein. (he was no dummy, and he knew some stuff as well). Check out Sir Ken Robinson on TED.com on education and creativity. Genius.

Respect, VB.

Face Book is a strange place
I try to steer people here if I can because of the bad information people post on face book regarding amps and repairs

Face Book is just a chat page.
Postings scrolls off the front page and are lost and not seen ever again
Not really a good way to distribute information

Hmmm.  Let's see, Leo Fender went to college as an accounting major.  Good thing he never built amps!

Jim
Built one hell of a company tho.  Built a guitar or 2, but in your opinion only 1.  Sorry, couldn't resist.

Since I'm not a mod here anymore, I'll see if I can't get myself banned.......

You Sir, are an ASS

We who live in the good 'ol USA can still call ourselves anything we wish to (at least for a little while longer, until the EU wannabes take over completely)

I am a Biomedical Technician (BMT on my business card) because I choose to call myself one.

I have never been to formal school to become one, with the exception of multiple factory training schools, which only address certain manufacturer product lines, not general repair and diagnosis techniques.

I do, however have over 30 years of direct experience in the field, and I am known throughout my region as the man to call to keep your medical practice up and running.
Physicians and top hospitals recognize me as a BMT.
Leading medical equipment manufacturers recognize me as a factory trained and qualified BMT
My liability insurance carrier (which covers me for many millions of $$$) recognizes me as a qualified technician.
My boss (me, since I am the president and CEO, unless you want to count the lil'missus) pays me $100's/per hour to perform my magic.

I am a Biomedical Technician

You are an ASS.....treating the host of this forum like you have done (and have also done to other fellow members in the past) makes you one. Here's your diploma....
