My new puppy!
« on: August 18, 2014, 11:34:41 pm »
We have had several Belgian Shepherds in our family over the years.  They are fantastic dogs and very devoted companions.  They need space and loads of exercise, have a VERY strong herding instinct, and their long black hair is EVERYWHERE!  The Belgian comes in three flavors, the Shepherd /Groenendael (black long coat), Tervuren (fawn to dark colored long coat), and Malinois (fawn to dark colored short coat).  So we decided to try the Malinois.  Mal's are used extensively in the military and police - everything from IED and other bomb sniffing, drugs, tracking, and cadaver.  I've seen photos of them parachuting out of transport planes with Seal Teams.  They are amazing animals and can not wait to see how my little girl grows up!  My wife and daughters are fighting over her name, either Anna or Elsa from the Disney cartoon Frozen....  So much for the courageous/regal names I was thinking about....

Here she is on the way home.  She slept in my lap for about 45 minutes of the drive and crawled into the crate for the last 30 minutes.  Really a smart pup for 8 weeks.  Now she is laying next to me as I type.

I forgot to post my puppy. Chloe is a Great Pyrenees. This is her in late May. Since then she has doubled in weight. Very nicely conformed for "pet grade" Pyr, pretty smart though sensitive, VERY frisky. Unlike your dog, the Pyr isn't much of a herder (there's a little dog for moving the flocks); the Pyr dozes on the hill with one eye open for wolf, bear, or UPS trucks which have to be barked-off.

Well it's been 4 months and like PRR's Pyr my "puppy" has gone from the size of my car console to about 26" at the shoulder.  She is absolutely fearless and is incredibly athletic.  I tried to get some of her "airs above the ground" antics, but failed miserably.  Super intelligent and sweet, I think we have a winner.  Oh, since she has a little beauty mark on her face, we had to pick a supermodel name.  So Sasha it is.  Not very German, but will do just fine!

She also has developed her adult bark and the UPS guys (and trucks) are notably impressed.  Like I said, she is fearless.  Now I know why these guys use them.  Here are some Seal Team Malinois in action.

> Well it's been 4 months

It's been 3 years and we were digging for puppy-photos of our Chloe. She topped-out just around 100 pounds, VERY furry (our snowstorm in July), will never catch-on that if she wagged at the UPS man instead of bark-bark-bark she would get a treat. (Our Corgi has that figured out; sadly he has a tummy-thing and is very-restricted diet.)

Was at a tag-sale. Were told there was a dog inside. One of those poodle-mixes, very calm and quiet with strangers. Got to the next room.... it was FULL of dog. One dog! Irish Wolfhound. I never met one up close. It was not a small kitchen but this beast lay across it diagonally. Barely concerned that strange strangers were stepping over her.

I hope you and your Belgian are doing well.

I've got a big dog, she's a mutt, but mix of Mastiff, Great Dane, Boxer and Rottweiler.  then there's my other dog, he's a french bulldog... the two are quite the pair.  Here's a pic of the two of them enjoying the sun out on our deck :)

Ahhh! Just catchin' some rays dad!  :icon_biggrin:

PRR

Snowstorm in July!  We had the black storm in July when we had the Belgian Sheepdog.  The current Mal sheds her undercoat but the short hairs are not too bad if we run a brush through her outside every other day or so.  Re. UPS - she is still on the hill watching over her flock (you) and will probably be that way forever!  That's her job and she is stickin' to it! :icon_biggrin:  Irish Wolfhounds are HUGE!  I love big dogs but the short lifespans of the larger breeds would kill me.  In my mind they do not live long enough as it is....

Our Mal is doing good.  We are doing dock diving with her since she is extremely toy driven and would rather be in the water than out.  Her distance is ok, no where near record numbers, but we are going to start doing extreme height dock jumping.  I am tall and my reach at fingertips is 8ft.  She can jump flat foot (paw) from directly below and take a ball out of my hand at ~ 7'8".  Maybe this is her competition niche!
