Whats the best way to......
« on: January 08, 2015, 09:18:12 am »
A lot of times im driving down the road and dreaming and thinking of amp builds and schematics. Thats when things start to click. When sudden realizations occur and I think "OH....so thats why this does that" or "THATS HOW THAT WORKS"

And also a lot of times I think of a real simple one answer questions like this:
"is one gain stage when half of a triode is used? for example does a whole triode consist of 2 gain stages? or does the whole tube itself classify as a gain stage. Now I know it depends on what the tube is used for, ect. I just see the term gain stage and want to be clear. Another example, I would assume my 2204 has 4 gain stages before the PI because there are two 12ax7's before it being used as makeup??

Ok so I dont want to post a whole thread devoted to this one question. So whats the best way to get an answer? I don't want to be the annoying guy on the forum. I've had people already say "why didnt you just ask this in your post about the last build" or whatever. Just lookin for some advice on getting my questions answered and learning without annoying anyone.

Thanks.

If you see a thread that is related to your question, ask in that thread. If not, start a new thread. But by all means, ask. That's how we learn. Even if you ask a question that gets asked several times every month, the friendly guys here will answer. They may even point you to a sticky thread that deals with common questions. Most people are not annoyed by legitimate questions, regardless of how basic they may seem to some people.

Don't worry about being the annoying guy on the forum. That position is already filled.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

When a tube is used to amplify it is a gain stage.  Dual triodes are 2 tubes in one bottle so 2 potential gain stages or amplification stages.  Since gain is often misused term and refers incorrectly to distortion some get confused.

If your 2204 has 4 triodes that are functioning you will have amplification from each.

What?  What did I say NOW.... :dontknow:   Are you sure your not talking about Tubenit? :icon_biggrin:

Seriously madman, if the question has to do with one of your builds or someone else's - ask away on that thread.  A general question such as this - start a dedicated post.  I have been hanging out on this forum since the beginning (about 15 yrs).  I am NOT one of the gurus but I am amazed at what I learn every time I come here.  Questions such as the ones you ask, no matter how basic they might seem, can cause a light bulb to go on for someone else who may have been afraid to ask or didn't realize the relationship.  I have looked at other "amp" forums where it seems to be a competition to see how many jokes can be made about the newbe or the self centered bragging about personal knowledge.  I just do not see that here.  There are many stories about people who came here with zero knowledge and would hurt themselves with a soldering iron.  Those same folks are now very knowledgable contributors, designers, and builders.  You are among friends.

I don't know if I've been around since the beginning, but I have been here through at least 3-4 iterations of this forum. I started out knowing only a bit more than Ohm's Law. I asked a bunch of questions, got corrected even when I thought I had it right, and have learned a lot.

So yep, ask away!

What they are not saying is if you have say a 12AX7 with two gain stages and you only use one and leave the other idle unused--boy your in a heap of trouble---no un-used gain stages goes unpunished :icon_biggrin:
On the right track now<><
