Please help identify these speakers
« on: January 12, 2015, 04:48:35 am »
Hello all,

I have two 12" mystery speakers that I got a while ago and it would be helpful to know what they actually are. The guys I got them from know nothing about their origins. With so many knowledgeable people here on the forum, maybe someone can shed some light on this.

The first one has a paper label on the magnet that says "Jensen LTD". However, I am not sure whether that is original. The rim code looks like Q5C014 which is unlike the "standard" rim codes. I looked up all the available information about rim codes but I have no idea how to interpret that. The speaker is very heavy and the magnet is huge. The cage has three spokes and seems to be made from aluminium cast. The terminal clamps are unusual.

the other one is from a pair of identical speakers which came out of a speaker cabinet. That is all I know. It has absolutely no writing/label so I don't even know the manufacturer. The cage has some resemblance with celestion speakers but I would expect that a celestion speaker is properly labelled. Bearing the name is a bonus, after all.

Thanks a lot for any input.

There is typically a six to seven digit number printed on the speaker.  The first three digits are EIA numbers which tell you who the manufacturer is.  Post the numbers and someone on the forum will help.

The trouble is... I have posted all the information I have. There are no other numbers or digits anywhere on these speakers than the one that is shown on the rim of the "Jensen". The other speaker has no code at all.

What are the numbers stamped into the magnet on the 100w speaker? They are partially covered by the label, The numbers are right next to the green spot.

Thanks! Great find. I didn't see those. It says:

A 37/8-1,4 TGL200-7081

Searching for "TGL200-7081" reveals that it is a magnet system made in East Germany during the 80s by VEB Fernmeldewerk Leipzig. And this speaker

http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/fernm_leip_lautsprecher_chassis_l351_2.html

is definitely a close relative of mine. So it is a PA speaker and the "Jensen" sticker is a fake (which I suspected anyway). That explains why it sounded so bright when I used it for guitar.

One mystery solved. Thanks a lot!

Well I guess there's not much chance to find out anything about the other one.

The cage has some resemblance with celestion speakers but I would expect that a celestion speaker is properly labelled. Bearing the name is a bonus, after all.

I used to have an early-70's 100w Marshall cab with very nice G12H30 speakers. They had no plastic backs on them and no name/label.

However, with any Celestion speaker you should see a 3 or 4 digit code stamped on the cone itself, which would identify the cone type (which can vary even with the same model speaker).

Without that, I don't see a way to call it any particular brand or model. Best you could do is listen to the speaker and see if it sounds good.
