Next build, Hoffman AC30?
« on: May 11, 2015, 02:06:58 pm »
I'm torn.  I just finished building a 5f6a and tweaking my older 5E3.  They are both great.  I was tempted to build a larger 5E3, something like a 5X5, 5E5, or 5E5A Pro, but now I'm thinking I should do something different.  Maybe the AC30.

Does anyone have any recommendations on the following:

1. Chassis options for the Hoffman AC30?  Would prefer something pre punched.

2. Transformers?  I see that Doug's part list doesn't show them, so I'm guessing he doesn't have them.  I have seen these http://www.classictone.net/Vox-AC30-Vintage-Style-Transformers.html  which seem like a nice compete set of PT, OT and choke.  Also I know Mercury Magnetics has more expensive ones, but there are lots they list.

Would it make sense to do the more affordable Classic Tone for PT and then the MM for output, where the sonic benefit may be most noticeable?  Also, what about the odds of fitting any of these in a pre punched chassis, like Doug's latest 18 watt?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

If you renonce to the vibrato channel the space necessary is much less than for the whole AC30

but if you want the complete circuit is all a different affair

Here's a link to Sluckey's Vox AC15, extremly well documented and great pictures;

Yes, I don't need the vibrato and thought it might be nice to have a little extra headroom that the AC30 might have over the AC15?  Looking at Doug's layout, I'm wondering if with a set of transformers from either Classic Tone, MM or a combination of both, Doug's 18 watt chassis would work?

I think the Classic Tone PT can be mounted on top of the chassis, so it doesn't necessarily need to fit into the rectangular cut out.

I've been trying to decide the same thing chassis wise. I'm going to go with the 17x6.5x2.5 shown in Doug's parts page.  And use a stand up transformer.

FWIW I've been talking with Patrick at MM and he mentioned the TW-KF-OT for the output transformer (though I don't really need multiple primaries).  For a PT he's suggesting FTBP-59M2 which is 315-0-315.  Have you used MM's before?  I find the differences to be subtle, but there tends to be that certain "something" with an MM vs Hammond.  YMMD

I've pulled the trigger on building a DC-30 clone- dizzy 30.  I would have preferred to do the Hoffman AC-30 but unlike some of the other of Doug's offerings, there were no transformers or chassis to go with it and I'm not knowledgeable enough to go it alone yet.  The 5F6A I just did turned out great, but Doug basically has every single part you need including the chassis, so it's really more like a kit.
