Any Threads on building speaker cabinets?
« on: October 22, 2015, 02:06:48 pm »
I tried a forum search and didn't get anything spectacular, I also tried googling and still am not seeing tons.

I'm debating between a 2x12 and a 4x12 but don't know who might have some good plans for some?  I'm doing open backed because I don't want to get involved in all the complex area calcuations for an enclosed cabinet.  (I know it helps directionality better, but I'm not going to likely need to ever worry about that in my situation).

I think that some links to good data on this would be a good sticky... :)

Both look like great resources.  Thanks.  I'm thinking of doing the 2x12 as a horizontal flat one.  I've got a huge head I'll be building for my Vox AC30 clone that I've built, that I'd like to set on top of it.  Timbo, I guess mine could have the angle like yours and still hold the head on top though.  drgonzonm I checked out tubebooks.org that is an amazing site, thanks, but I didn't seem to find anything on building speaker cabinets.

At any rate, thanks to both of you!

I built a 4X open-back cab (2X 10's diagonally w/ 2X 12's) to fit under my Ampeg V4 which is a pretty large head.  I wanted the footprint of the cab to match the footprint of the amp  -- not bigger (and certainly not smaller!).  4x 10's would've worked too.   Anyway, the taller cab makes it easier to reach the controls on the amp.  This is a consideration, especially if the control face forward and not upwards.

Another alternative, per Kevin O'Connor is a "detuned" closed-back cab -- the size of a 4X but with only 2 speakers, and two empty ports in the baffle board the size of speaker holes.  Box criteria is not critical.

Are you talking construction or design?
or both?

Design mostly, I get most of the construction techniques, I can do finger joints with my table saw and dado blade etc, just want to know optimal sizing etc.  I think, from what I gather, on open backed cabs, size isn't as much of a consideration, but the sound is not directional, whereas a closed cab needs to be optimized by volume based on the speakers and whatnot... just looking for some designs I can follow to do one or the other.

Fresh_Start, thanks! That first page was great, it had exactly what I was thinking of.  I'd known before about Q when I was say 25 or so, but had forgotten the term and what it was all about.

I think the first cab I make will be open backed to make it smaller and easier to handle, 2x12.  I'll report back with a new thread with pics etc. once I get to it :)

Phil,

I'm guessing that with a 4x12 in consideration, these will be gig cabinet(s)?  Please take it from someone who used to haul around four of these beasts (as a considerably younger dude...), do your back a favor and build the 2x12.  If you need some additional air movement, build two.  If you like the slant design, you can build two vertical cabs with that feature (Timbo).  Much easier to carry and fit in vehicles and you can even set a 2x12 on the back seat of a car without taking off half the upholstery while doing it.  Show us your build pics!

Absolutely excellent advice, I think I mentioned in my last post I'm thinking 2x12 sounds best.  I agree, I'm not a spring chicken anymore :)  I used to haul around combo amps to live shows and that kicked my ass.  I had a bass player that had a huge speaker cab for his rig and lugging that beast up stairs at age 27 almost killed me :)

Haha! you are preaching to the choir brother!  Along with my 4, 4x12 cabs and my 80lb Major head, I had to help my bass player with his SVT head and cabinets up and down stairs.  I think our drummer had the best deal of all of us!  And I used to make fun of drummers.....  :think1:  Our friends/roadies, who swore they would help with the heavy stuff, were suddenly scarce when the time came.  However, they were right there to carry the cords and guitars. :icon_biggrin:  They just wanted to get in free and scope out the girls from the stage!  Ahhh the good OLD days!  I was a lot more flexible back then!
