I just have to say that the Chris Stapleton / Justin Timberlake performance was the best I have ever seen on an awards show.

Now those are 2 words you don't often hear in the same sentence, "soul" and "country".  I avoid the genre for it's slick emptiness after being quite a fan in the '80's when it went through a renaissance.  Sadly commercialization killed it in the end.  The only country artist I still dig is Corb Lund, writing chops on par with the big boys.  I still like hot Tele chicken picking though.  Go figure.

I am guessing that is not mainstream country.  Just like you I never listen to country radio as it all sounds the same to me.  I grew up playing country in the late 70s, 80s, and 90s.  The stuff I hear today is so far away from that era and it doesn't appeal to me for the most part.  It is so over produced to my eyes and taste. 

However, the stuff on the clip was great!

I had never heard of Corb Lund until a few weeks ago.  I was driving around the Ottawa area when I heard him featured on a CBC Radio 1 program.  Yes, he sure can write.

I thought it was reasonably good music and liked it. But it seemed odd to me for country music also?

Given my beautiful wife listens to country ALOT and that I like country also ....................   the music seemed out of place for CMA in the context of what I typically hear as country.

Since the consolidation of the record industry and the loss of a lot of great studios, Nashville is now the home of a variety of music.  Used to be if you visited Nashville's you could just walk in any club and see a Country act.  The LA scene was where Rock was, but now folks like The Black Keys reside in Nashville along with Peter Frampton.

Modern Country attempts to be all things to all listeners, but music has also became a much more personal form of entertainment.  Used to be a time when everyone had a Stereo with large speakers.

I played a show Saturday with a group that plays Country and they bill themselves as "Old" Country, not traditional, but old.  Played stuff like Alabama Jubilee and the newest song we played was a request of an old John Anderson tune Swangin'.  Had a great show.  I am sorry, but Justin Timberlake and Hootie for that matter should never be on a show billed as country, but I guess if it ain't Rap music, it is country rap music.

If Lynyrd Skynyrd was a brand new act they would be billed as country, but only if they added a few of those Hillbilly Rap songs.

I hear ya Ed, and I'm a big fan of old country as that is what I grew up playing.  I am also a fan of good music in general.  While I agree that today's country does try to be all things ( I sound like my parents when I was young ) I also appreciate new things and progressions.  I do not like Rap or Bro Country in the least myself as it does say anything musically to me.  Hell, I'm a steel player too so you know I like the old stuff. 

Even with all that being said Justin T and Chris did a phenomenal job no matter what we call it IMHO only...  In today's world we live in we are approaching way too many labels and such.

To many labels and no record labels anymore.  I appreciate good music and am a huge fan of Blues and Bluegrass.  A friend of mine wrote this song after seeing a buddy of his at Dollar General who was getting divorced.  My problem with the big music machine is songs like this one never see the light of day.  My buddy Dave Adkins is a great writer so pay attention to the words.  He left Nashville because he said there is no place for his songs.

That sounds like a George Strait song for sure - George is awesome by the way!  I'm an old fart too.  I like the old stuff like the old swing - Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys.  And the REALLY old stuff like Sons of the Pioneers, Bill Monroe.  The newer (old) country that I like - Ricky Van Shelton (awesome voice), Reba, Vince Gill (another awesome voice), Ricky Skaggs, Garth on a few.  I also like some of the, what I call 70's crossover - Nitty Gritty, Poco, Pure Prarie, Emmylou, Allman Bros, and the mighty MIGHTY Marshall Tucker.  I have no time for the new country.

I understand that Stapleton has written many a hit for the big names and Justin has been pushing him to go solo because he is a big fan.  Nice gesture if true.

Remember a guy named Eddie Raven?  Cort Lund's music and style reminds me of him.  Good stuff.

BTW, I was not knocking Justin Timberlake as he is a huge celebrity and a lot of folks like him a lot.  Very talented, sing, act and play some as well.  It is just my preference in liking music that is more on the raw side like Waylon and my preference to the Bakersfield sound where steel guitars ruled and Don Rich invented guitar twang.

There are only 2 kinds of music, Good and Bad as Willabe reminds me.  My ego says I know which is which better than most.

I guess that is why I don't hear much new music on TV and Radio that I like.  I am in the minority.

Don't you think this outlaw business done got out of hand?  I just miss it and find it hard to believe Country Radio doesn't play Jamey Johnson.

Then let me.     I'm NOT a fan of fast/narrow/quivering vibratos and his falsetto is on the thin/nasally side, not full. I find little comfort in listening to him sing.     Entertainment wise he's a jack of all trades.

Well you know he is playing with a Bluegrass group now.  He spend much of his middle 20's till he was in his early 30's in Nashville.  Wrote a lot of things that were used as demo's and was offered a writing contract that was basically worthless.  Amazingly he is not bitter.  He has a lot of good songs like this he has written, but he refused to give them away.

So he joined up with some guys in North Georgia and they play a lot of bluegrass festivals.  That is why you don't hear drums, but when we play together he gets to do what he calls No Grass Country.  That means the songs wont fly as bluegrass and are based in blues scales Major and Minor.

What is so funny is he has written 5 great songs all from ideas while at Dollar General stores.  The song I posted, the story behind it is the old southern things.  See a friend from the community and you ask hows moma and them?  When he asked this friend, he informed Dave he was getting divorced.  Dave asked him how he was doing and he said he just couldn't turn off the love like his wife had done.

He said he did not hear anything else the guy said and ran out to his pickup and wrote the song in just a few minutes.  Later that evening he called me and asked me what I thought about it.  Music is very emotional to me and all I had was a big lump in my throat and could not hardly talk.  Of course he laughed and said thanks.

Every time I play it the same thing happens.
