The Thanksgiving cardinal
« on: November 26, 2015, 08:55:19 am »
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!    There is MUCH to be grateful for in our lives!

I had set my orange bird seed bucket on the porch last night to remind myself to fill up all four bird feeders.  The birds are accustomed to me filling up the bird feeders and apparently have pieced together that the buckets and/or  me with the bucket by the feeders means that are about to be fed.   Often they will pounce on the birdfeeder when I simply take a few steps a way from it.  (particularly the FAT little chickadees, the rascals that they are)

So this morning,  I look on the porch and see a cardinal standing next to the orange bucket.  I walk up to our sliding glass door and the cardinal doesn’t move.  I open the sliding door and the cardinal doesn’t move! Whoa!!!  This is cool!   I walk up to the bird and it doesn’t move!  Unbelievable!  So, I grab the orange bucket walk up to the bird feeders and fill them up and then walk into the garage to put the bucket up.
 :icon_biggrin: :icon_biggrin:

And when I come back the cardinal is still standing there.  So, I then became concerned that maybe something was wrong with the cardinal and decided being on the porch was not a good thing because we have cats in our neighborhood.  And we all know how evil and demented cats are.  I began thinking maybe the cardinal had been attacked by the cat, a hawk or ran into a window or sliding glass or something?
I was afraid this small and admirable creature was injured or ill & the thought of that left me quite sad since I have a great affection for these backyard aviators.

So, I said a prayer that this lovely bird would be OK or healed!  I went into the garage and got some leather gloves and went out and gently picked up the cardinal and carefully took it to the bird feeder and set it on one of the perching post that they feed from.  I wanted him off the ground so the wicked cats could not bother it or have it for breakfast.  I shudder to think of the cardinal being inside one of those vile creatures.
 :violent1:

Well, the bird never seemed afraid or agitated.  In fact, I am convinced the bird was at peace and rather liked me quite well thru this whole process.

So, I watched the cardinal off and on for maybe 7 to 10 minutes sitting on this perch.  Then the bird scoots over and begins eating some sunflower seeds.  Several other birds then fly up to the feeder & my pet cardinal, Rufus (he deserved a name at this point),  flies off totally normally & joins some other birds sitting in the bushes.

I am sure he was telling all his bird friends what swell people Jeannine and I are & that he was grateful that we enjoy our birds a lot.   Actually , we enjoy the birds about 50 lbs a month, 600 lbs a years worth in sunflower seeds.  The dove on our feeders have grown so large that they  are capable of picking up small children and flying off with them.

Hope all of you have a GREAT Thanksgiving!  I am appreciative of being part of this amp building community!

Best regards,  Jeff

Haha!  That is too cool!  We had a turkey hanging out in our yard last summer.  Completely tame.  He would follow us around and the dogs were freaked out scared of it!  Then one day he disappeared - hopefully without a coyote's assistance...
