best speakers for my builds
« on: February 13, 2016, 06:10:09 pm »
I dont have a cab for my tweed deluxe yet and I bought a jenson 12 inch mod for it.....not too bad.

Thinking a Jenson C12N for the princeton reverb, and thats the price range I can afford.....would like to get a Celestion to try out with one or the other....any thoughts in that price range?

I'm gathering parts for a Tweed Deluxe build right now. Overall consensus here, there and almost everywhere is that a Weber 12A125A is the best speaker if you want to get as close to vintage as possible. Have one shipping right now. The new Jensen P12R or P12Q look more expensive and don't get as many good reviews for the 5E3.

My Princeton Reverb has a Weber 10A150T in it and I can't imagine changing it out.  From Weber site "Brighter, articulate, big bottom, aggressive, loud, compressed at high volume.". Much more expensive than $90 though.

BTW a Celestion Blue is supposed to be great in the Tweed Deluxe but $270 is too rich for my blood.

Hope this helps - picking out the right speaker is almost as difficult as choosing the right woman!

We have proven once again no plan survives contact with the enemy, or in this case, with the amp.

Yep, the Weber's are only ~$30 more than the speakers you're talking about, until you get into alnico speakers with 1.5" voice coils. For that amount, I'd save an extra few weeks to get the better speaker.

The modern Jensen may have improved over the years, but I don't know. I was always happy with the C10Q as an authentic-sounding copy of that model, and that they sounded great immediately. Whenever I heard the modern Jensen alnico speakers, they were crazy bright & harsh (who knows, maybe they needed break-in).

All the Weber speakers are excellent, but they have different sounds in different models. I'd call/email and ask their suggestion. Tell them exactly what amp it will go in and what you want.

Well, then you're stuck with a G12M as the classic sound. But do you want you amp to sound American or British? The speaker will really have that much impact.

I'd suggest doing your best to hear sound clips of the speakers you're considering, probably through very good headphones. Then save the money to get the right model, rather than the right-now model.
