Reverend Kingsnake

I'm seriously considering the Reverend Kingsnake as my next 'ground-up' build. Before I get too far down the road on it, I thought I'd ask for input from those with experience. Do any of you see anything you would change or consider changing about the original schematic for longevity, tone, options, etc.? And next, What recommendations can you offer about parts selection (favorite brand caps, transformer, etc.)? Thanks for any input.

Maybe you could simplify the jacks for speaker,  1 jack and 1 selector for different loads. There are probably a lot more things to think about and tweaks that the more experienced guys around here can tell you for sure!

Looks like a 5F6a plus a Marshall inspired boost on front. And modern power supply with DC heaters. Hard to fault that plan.

A lot of people like the amps because of price mainly.  The one I checked out is a bit too loud for club usage unless you are playing around 10,000 square foot venues.  I do not see any voltages on the schematic, but to get 60 watts from a pair of 6L6GC you have to be hitting them hard.


The amp feels stiff and on the sterile side.  Not trying to discourage you as I do like some of the features.  I would try the iron from a BlackFace Bandmaster or vibroverb to put it closer to 35 to 40 watts.  Also the OT from the Vibroverb will saturate much earlier giving a nice breakup at a lower volume but still not have any noticeable sag.


I would use all 1 watt Metal Film resistors except where larger are noted on the schematic.  Filter Caps F&T and signal caps a lot of guys are liking the Jupiter Doug is selling.  If they are to pricy the Mojo Dijon yellows are fine.

If you do a layout and plan to make a board, you can simply use Doug's board ordering template and receive your board ready to put eyelets or turrents on or you can order the board with those installed as well.

Thanks so much to those who've weighed in. Ed, you're right that I'll probably never need the power this thing has (I had to put an attenuator into my Princeton build just to be allowed to hear distortion), so I will definitely use smaller iron as suggested. I was drawn to this amp for its option switches (part of what may be complicating the tone stack!) If there's an amp out there in the 20-40 Watt range that has that same flexibility, now would be the time for me to find it!
