*NEW* head cabs for Stout chassis
« on: April 26, 2017, 12:37:36 pm »
I'm back at it and just looking to see if there's any interest in these.
I had to make 2 for myself so I wound up doing the dovetails for 7 more.
So, I currently have 7 of these in pre-construction, for sale at $80 each plus $10 shipping = $90 total via PAYPAL
Bare #2 pine (this time not the #1) with the knots cut out, so it all looks good enough for staining/finishing and I will be doing front face panels that will provide clearance to the precut holes on the Stout chassis.

Any interest, please just post here or PM if you need privacy.

Here's the old thread, so anyone who wasn't around for the first batch can catch up.
http://el34world.com/Forum/index.php?topic=18238.0

This new batch is slightly taller to better accommodate big output tubes and provide more clearance, also slightly narrower so there is very little extra room on the sides, when the chassis slides in. These were designed to go with Doug's Stout chassis (1st listed on this page):
http://hoffmanamps.com/MyStore/perlshop.cgi?action=template&thispage=Chassis&ORDER_ID=442224273

Approximate Dimensions:
Outside - 15"W x 9"H x 8 3/8"D
Inside - 13 1/2"W x 7 1/2"H x 8 3/8" D

***DISCLAIMER*** I am not a pro wood worker so you should expect a flaw or 2 somewhere on these boxes...nothing major, but worth noting, so you are not expecting perfection.

The bottom pic is how amazing Doug's heads turned out after he stained one and cut the faceplates in his CNC

They're really nice! I've been working up the courage to try a dovetail cab. Box joints stress me out as it is but yours really look nice.

Once you get that Harbour Freight jig cutting the correct depth it pays to cut a bunch.  Across the street from my shop is a cabinet shop that only makes drawers.  They have a machine that cuts up to 14" of dovetails at once.  They do finger joints too.  It will break your heart to see how fast they make these things.

They do appear to look nice and I am sure they are.  It is great offer.

It broke my heart and my wallet paying for kitchen sink-base and trash-drawer. Judging by unglued veneer and cracked joints, I'm sure they churn these things out faster than the eye can see, but they charge like their stuff was gold.

Maybe I should get a kitchen re-do estimate from you.....

PRR, not the same people I assure you.  I had them make me solid maple drawer boxes and I used the soft close drawer guides.  Put corian on top in my kitchen.  I prefer man made to granite.  This was after I paid good money for a cabinet shop to build me some that either stuck, were cocked or the bottoms did not hold.

These guys do Baker, Henredon, Bernhardt furniture grade in the same machines.

The other day they had a desk outside then had made from old termite infested wood.  Sounds gross.  Of course all was treated and filled with a aqua epoxy based filler.  The only way I knew about it is Bob, the owner wanted to add some LED lighting and came over to ask if I would show them how to do this.

I really appreciate nice woodworking and which I were able to do it myself.  I can make some things, but my perfectionistic attitude kills me in woodworking.

For instance, I made am a couple of head boxes last month and one of them I could just barely feel the dovetails.  I normally do finger joints, but I thought I would try dovetailing.  So in my infinite wisdom I decided to trim just a smudge off the edge and rounder again.

Certainly I left the table saw blade a little to high and jammed the box in the jig.  So now instead of stain, this one gets tolex. :l2: :l2:

This is why I am fairly good at doing tolex.

Yes, but a better carpenter is not too lazy to sand which is what I should have done.  What is worse is I knew I should have sanded, even said to myself just sand it, but Nooooooooooooooooooooo the table saw is much much faster.

Thanks for all the bumps guys, and the ad space.
Here's one of DL's two that are getting ready to ship.
This chassis is a 1st gen. with a "Champ Deluxe Reverb " build in there for picture day.
That's a JJ 6V6S in there, which is slightly taller than most other 6V6 tubes I've seen.
Plenty of room for a KT88  :icon_biggrin:
Faceplate is just squeezed in for now, not secured yet....

Nice!
So the ones you are making are poplar?
And they are the same size as the poplar one in my photo, except these are 9 inches tall instead of 8 3/8 inches tall like mine?
Correct?

Not really looking to get rich but I'd like to get rid of these without having to buy 5 chassis myself .

The reply you wiped out just said:
-Not poplar.... #2 pine with major imperfections cut out

-Yes, dimensions are close to the one I made you, with the biggest difference being the 9" height (for bigger output tubes)
I could make 'em either way in the future.

Ok I will
But first, can you take a straight on front shot to match the straight on back shot in your in reply #9
I will use those two photos

People will want to see front and back with a chassis inside

Edit, I just noticed the top of the cabinet is cut off in your back shot
Can you take a front and back with the chassis inside and show all of the cabinet?

I had DL's 2 cabs boxed up before I realized I didn't have a good shot of the front.

So, now I need to finish another face panel so I can get a good pic.

The face panels are the tough part....one wrong move and you cant put the wood back  :BangHead:

I keep getting interrupted with others' requests and am so far behind doing personal stuff it's killing me. I hope I can get into the virtual line reserve a few in the future just can't do it at the moment though. I noted the kt88 clearance too 😈 A small but high powered design would be killer...

That was the first book I had ever seen that dealt specifically with guitar amps. I stood in the store just reading it for almost an hour before a salesman (also a friend) said just take it home. I thought the book was an easy read and presented the material more in a conceptual manner rather than in depth analysis. Also focused on the practical side of working on this stuff and troubleshooting. I learned a lot from that book. And the schematics library was a special bonus.

I tend to hold on to tech books way past the time that I use them, especially books I acquired while I was young. Something about books that's not present with online media. If you ever reach a point where you don't need it maybe you can pass it on to someone you know will appreciate it. Until then, enjoy!
