New workbench fume extraction
« on: January 11, 2020, 01:00:50 pm »
I'm getting ready to set up my new workbench and I need to get solder fumes out of the house. I'm looking at using a bathroom exhaust fan mounted in the wall near the soldering station.. There will be about 4' up to the ceiling and then about 12 ft over to the closest window where I can set up an outlet like a dryer vent.
With that distance I was thinking I might want/need an additional inline fan near the window that will help. I am considering the inline duct fans that HD sells.
Should I consider using PVC pipe for the 12' run?
What diameter makes sense? I'm guessing 4" so it wiil be easy to adapt to some flex pipe.
Just wanted to see if anyone thought of anything that I didn't.

100cfm in a 4" duct is only 20 feet per second. We routinely size heating ducts to 400+ feet a second. I don't think you have any friction out past 100 feet.

a fwiw;

my redneck camper is ~330-ish cubic Ft, mounted a couple ~~ 100cfm fans, so in my world I'd have complete air-turns pretty quick.

once I proved that wasn't quite right, I found the "dead" spots, blockages, disruptions, so I need at least 2 more ~~ 100 cfm fans smartly placed to get most of the air turned in a few minutes

Thanks guys...this is one of those cases where I'm really glad I paused and asked.

I almost leaped before I looked and just went into HD and bought the in stock stuff.

This deserves more attention and I'm looking hard at different options.

I'd like to get it done soon, and the good news is, I'll have 8 hours of jury duty tomorrow to search on my tablet.

love the hanging out with peers thing, been called up 6 times in 30 yrs  :think1:

something that came in handy for me "fine-tuning" smoke extraction, canned smoke, used in smoke alarm testing, was free since I did the testing in between govmt certifiers

play nice, you might need one or 2 peers on your side if you ever wind up in the hot seat  :icon_biggrin:

He’s from Philly, you know he’s needed a jury’s help.... :help:

Fart fans do not move much air. Good for an enclosed small space but have you actually seen one that KEEPS UP with steamy showers? Until long after you stop. When I was at the fuse place we still had a lot of solder stations, both for automated and manual events. All were point of application. It doesn’t take much but one mounted up on a wall in the vicinity I’m afraid will leave you breathing lots before you get an air exchange. What about a duct booster fan with some woodworking flares or hoods like this.

I decided to go with a kitchen type exhaust hood and snagged a "new" 36"er off craigslist for 35 bux.
Paired it up with a 36" horizontal cabinet from Ikea ($45), took a jigsaw to it and ran it out through the back window. 7" to 6" reducer in the cabinet to 6" elbow, down to 4" out of a draft stopper and dryer type vent. We will see.
Hood fan says 190CFM / 2 speeds
If the built in fan turns out to be too noisy or not powerful enough I'll just gut it and go with an inline type.
I also have plans to strip out the little light bulb socket and add a LED strip.
So far so good. Now I just have to get it wired up and i'll be up and running.

Sorry, left some out....  it doesn’t take a lot at point of application to suck those fumes away. You don’t need a room air exchange like the pot growers need, unless you have the fan up on the wall away from the work. And that’s just wasting heat in the winter and AC in the summer. Rig the hood so you can move it around on your bench.

That was before I saw your post.  The only downside is the fumes will still be passing by your noggin on the way out with an overhead vent.  That's why we did point of operation extraction at the fuse place instead of a large negative pressure area like a restaurant grill or chemical hood.

Yeah, I might wind up with a little flex foil retractable lung saver.
We'll see how it goes.

Should have the wire run this weekend.

I know, this items are very expensive, but this is the right item for that job

May be a DIY version ......

or, if you have only to solder on PCB and Amp Boards

Wow Franco, I'm not sure I have the overhead space for that boom arm.  :icon_biggrin:
But, that YouTube video definitely sparked an idea. I've been using it as pictured for a little while now and it does not get the fumes away from my nose fast enough.
I'm going to eventually add something small like that.

Thanks!
