Mystery Amp
« on: December 05, 2020, 01:11:54 pm »
Greetings tubeheads.
I’m a novice with an inherited little mystery amp that I thought might be fun to spruce up, if necessary. Easier to start with a kit but I’m hoping there are some basic things to be learned from this freebie.
I understand all the caveats and risks of working with tube amp electricity.
The amp in question worked the last time I fired it up years ago. I was told it’s a silvertone. The chassis is unmarked in a homemade case.
Closest I could fund was a silvertone 1449. Whereas the 1449 calls for a 6V6GT, the amp at hand has a 6BQ5. The other tubes are similar: 12AX7 x 2, 6X4.

Transformer nums are:
TF 509-0
-606-541

TF102-P
606-542

I’d like to identify the amp and find the schematic.

At a minimum, I want to replace the two prong power cord, which I will address in a seperate post if I need help. Ideally I could test the components and replace those out of spec but realize that may be wishful thinking. If it powers up, prob a good idea to check the bias.

Any ideas for identifying this unit would be appreciated.

Much bigger pics would help identify this amp but I suspect it's this Gibson...  Even the chassis layout looks the same.

I suggest to just plug it in and see what happens before replacing anything. No need to check bias on this simple cathode biased amp.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Cool!
Thanks sluckey. I’ll have to research that amp.

Just for the record, this amp turns out to be from a Kalamazoo Model 2.
Nicer schematic!
