Thread / post deletion
« on: June 29, 2021, 09:47:05 am »
I was surprised when a fairly long running thread got deleted yesterday, due to the OP taking umbridge.
I thought that after the matt h mass deletion fiasco over at TAG in 2015, measures would have been taken on other forums to prevent that.
As that doesn’t seem to be the case, I suggest that a rule change, to introduce a time limit for thread / post deletion, is considered.
As it is, a regular user could make a complete nonsense out of all the threads they’d been involved in, should they be so minded.

I found a setting in SMF that does not allow regular members to delete their own post
And another setting that does not let regular members remove their own topic

I set them both so that this cannot happen

They can edit their own post, which is fine, but they could blank out what they have previously written.

If anyone wants to test this they are welcome
But you have to be a regular member, not a moderator or and Admin

Let me know if it works.

It works. A regular member can no longer delete their own message or their entire thread. Much better.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Ok, maybe you or another member still has the deleted post in your browser cache?

I looked but Edge has a different way of dealing with cache files. Not like the old days when you could view temporary internet files.

Ain't worth wasting any more of my time. I'm over it. The important thing is it can no longer be done.   :icon_biggrin:

Great, thanks, I think that’s a major improvement

I think that a time limit on post edits might also be worth considering, eg somewhere between a day and a month.

I don't like those time limited edits

I have gone back to other forums to update post after a year and cannot edit them
Updating projects with results or changing BOMS or other changes in the very first post is a good thing, IMO

Sure, but you can still edit your posts. Besides, you rarely say something stupid more than once or twice daily, usually after you been hangin' at the bait shop!    :l2:

this sucks. if i can't delete my own topics or content, there's no point in posting here. i loathe censorship of this sort.

Yikes, I took that for irony!

I assumed that because I don’t understand how losing the easy facility to delete a thread one has initiated equates to censorship?

Rather the position that the thread originator being unable to delete the thread is censorship seems bogus to me, a reversal of the actuality.
The previous scenario allowed the thread originator to censor the posts that others had made to the thread, because deleting the thread effectively erased their words etc from existence.
Which surely seems a destructive, regrettable action?

Cheers from Maryland!

I agree with the decision to not allow members to delete an entire thread.  For an OP to get peeved and just delete the entire thread and everyone else's thought and effort is just wrong.

I DO think a member should be able to delete their own single post.   There are times when that is best -- for example a recent comment about illness caused a Pavlovian response on my part that was ill considered, and I was able to delete it, with the thread staying alive -- and the quote from me stayed in the response from the other member.  And that's fine.

It's true that you can delete all the content of a post, substituting an icon or other comment, and that will work for me, though I prefer to be able to delete the post.  That may not be possible, I get it.

One design change I would personally like to see is a list of images and documents associated with a particular thread, so that one would not have to search paw through a thread to search for the latest schematic.  LOL, I'm pretty sure not possible with this forum software.

On a positive note, this forum is special.  Despite the obvious diversity in outlook/politics/worldview, the forum has remained pretty stable for a good long while.   And I personally thank Doug, our moderators, and members for this.   Not all forums are that successful.

Yeah, I'm old, so I'm allowed to gush good.

I don't think this is funny. There are many sides to "social media" and many of us have hot-spots. I think Pete is serious.

I don't see that it is that big of a deal not being able to delete your post

All you have to do is edit it and ask that it be deleted.

Delete your original text and add some new text
