Valve pedal hums (and can't carry a tune!)
« on: July 22, 2021, 08:13:50 pm »
Hey folks,

I've been tinkering with a tube pedal for a few days now and decided to turn to the pros for some guidance.
It all began when I found the schematic for a Persuader pedal. Looked simple enough, so I made my own board and slapped one together.

I seem to have 2 problems and I'm not sure they are related. The first is a loud hum (bypass sounds clear). It gets louder with the volume but slightly lower when I increase the gain.

The second problem is that it sounds like a low octave pedal with fuzz on top. It's a cool sound but not what I had in mind lol.

All of my voltage measurements seem to be close to the schematic's.
I've tried changing the tube and I've moved wires around to check for interference. I've gone over the diagram 3 times and can't see any errors. I'm hoping someone else can see what I've missed.

Well... problem solved. The power supply I was using - one of those cheap universal multiselect wall warts was the culprit.  :BangHead:

It works fine with all of my other pedals but introduced a frickin' TON of noise into the tube pedal. At a loss for what the problem could have been, I plugged an Electro Harmonix wart into it and suddenly had magical fuzz.

Here's hoping my headache will save someone else in the future. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a date with a wall wart and a baseball bat   :cussing:

Thanks
It's almost always simpler than we make it. I checked that p.o.s. before I chucked it. It was leaking 0.5VAC into the circuit!
