Where to source components for my next Marshall build??
« on: July 30, 2021, 07:43:16 am »

Hey Guys...

So I'm looking to build a Super Bass and want to source the components to put it together.  The most important part is that the Chassis (steel) will fit all the sockets, jacks, PT,OT, choke, etc without having to retrofit or drill extra holes, which is a PIA.  Ideally, I would like to buy everything from one place to save on shipping.  I live in Chinada, so shipping is expensive coming from the US.  I looked at Valvestorm website but have never ordered from them so I don't know their reputation.  Mojotone has stuff but much of it is out of stock or back ordered. Tubedepot and Antique Electronic Supply only have part of the kit (not all the pieces) so I'm concerned that things won't fit together.  I would also like a recommendation on someone that makes an excellent Turret Board.

PS: I would also like a recommendation on hookup wire brand (solid core 22 gauge).  I found silicon wire to be too soft to work with.

Thanks

We exist here because of the generostiy of the man who owns and runs this forum.
He sells parts.
He also makes the best damn turret boards this side of the Pacific ocean.
Search Hoffman Amplifiers Parts Catalog (hoffmanamps.com)

If you're not willing to wait for Mojo, you've got a tall order to try to source everything from one place.
It's out there but you're gonna have to put Google to the test.
I'd start by un-convincing myself that I need to source everything from one outlet.

+1 on buying as much as you can from Doug Hoffman. I’ve used his transformers in several builds and am very happy with those. His turret boards are top notch, as are all of the components like caps, resistors, switches, etc.

A steel chassis with the right holes in the right places may be your biggest challenge…

ETA:  you were typing simultaneously. I’d use Hoffman’s layout for a Fender or Marshal 7 days a week and twice on Sunday. Grounding is excellent if you follow his build method and there’s tons of detailed info here to help you do it.

Good luck!

We have proven once again no plan survives contact with the enemy, or in this case, with the amp.

Hoffman stocks the parts to build tube guitar amps. What I mean is, it's very easy to buy the correct components from his online shop. You don't need to know the part number, or manufacturer (like you do at Mouser). Scroll down near the bottom of this page and click on "resistors," for example. If you need 3 Watt resistors, there they are. No searching or guessing required. Hoffman has already done the parts homework for you. This helped me a great deal when I built my first amp in 2020. What he stocks are the right parts for guitar amps. His prices are good, and his shipping is fast.

But, you will need to buy your transformers and tubes elsewhere. Mojotone, Antique Electronic Supply, TubeDepot, and The Tube Store, among others are all good places.

+1 (or more!) on Doug's turret boards, they are incredibly robust and will last a lifetime.

For a chassis, try https://seasidechassisdesign.com -- he's Canadian, and does really sweet work, and fast.

I've been using Weico 22AWG stranded as hookup wire.  Although it is stranded, the core is pre-soldered, and thus it will stay where you put it; easy to work with.  But, to tell the truth, I would prefer to use 20 or 22 AWG solid with a PTFE insulator; that's been hard to find.

Take a look at Doug's Marshall-type project amps.   Not sure if they will fit your need, but they are quality designs that have stood the test of time.

McMaster Carr has a good selection of hook up wire.

Hoffman sells 22g solid core cloth push back braid wire. Comes in several colors.

I use 1 color for plate, 1 for K, another for grid on 9 pin preamp/PI tubes. And other colors for other things.

Easier to see/follow whats going where.

i would highly suggest pretinned stranded wire. solid core (even the thick stuff) is easy to nick while stripping and i have had it break trying to connect and solder to sockets (REALLY FUN when it's your carefully twisted and run heater string)

No nicking because there's no need to strip push back cloth braided wire.

Tefzel is similar to PTFE.   McMaster also sells similar.
