Silvertone 1432 mic channel mod
« on: August 13, 2021, 07:20:48 am »
I recently picked up a nice Silvertone 1432 1x12 at auction. Funny side story; the auctioneer bundled it with a lawn chair and a desk fan. I donated the chair and fan. Anyways after the usual cap job (all the teal sangamo tone caps were way out of spec) and a few resistor replacements it sounds good. But the mic channel is identical to the guitar channel except for no input grid stopper. I plan to add a 33k grid stopper, change the plate resistor to 220K, and change the cathode resistor to 1.8K bypassed with a 2, 5 or 10uf cap. No changes to channel 2. I'm not looking for high gain, just a channel with a different flavor than channel 2. Thoughts and ideas are appreciated.

the chair was the amp stand and the fan was for cooling, Gibson's won't work well without them

the topography doesn't leave much for change, so you've nailed down about all the changes I can see

Thanks Shooter - I think the auctioneer was shocked that I asked him to donate the fan and chair and left with the amp.

I would replace the input jacks with Switchcraft 12A jacks. Move the 1M to the mic jack and connect the switch lug to the ground lug. Ang wire the two instrument jacks as "Hi/Lo" jacks, ala Fender style.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Thanks Steve, despite working on lots of Fender amps, the hi/lo jacks did not occur to me.

Get another guitarist and a singer, you will all sound swell.

It is about as straightforward an amp as is possible. You want "flavors", get KoolAid. Or Fireball Cinnamon or Allen's Coffee Brandy. Or pedals.

Allen's Coffee Brandy.
A true Mainer. I went to the University of Maine. Allen's Coffee Brandy and Milk - a drink known as Liquid Panty Remover.
Made the changes a few minutes ago - the amp sounds good. The mic channel is a bit grittier. I went with a 10uf for the cathode bypass on that channel.
PRR, I was in your neck of the woods last week, or just North of it. Sea Kayaking in the Sullivan, Sorrento, Schoodic area. Calm seas all week - was great.
Oh yeah - I was in a band in 8th grade (1967) - we all plugged into one Silvertone. Sounded great as I recall. :icon_biggrin:

Have you tried it mixed with Moxie?

Judging by the trash on my road, Fireball is hot now.

Allen's Coffee Brandy and Moxie - OMG what have I been missing?
When I watch the Big Lebowski and the Dude mixes Kahlua with Coffee Mate, it always reminds me of college. Although our go-to was a 5-pack of Rheingold longnecks in a drawstring plastic bag.
