Modern KT77 remakes
« on: September 20, 2021, 09:46:35 am »
Anybody here ever use any of the modern remakes of the KT77 power tubes?

How do they sound compared to EL34's? Do you like them?

i used the jj kt77 in a build and they sounded fine. i originally needed something capable of higher anode voltage but i scrapped that idea

A Marshally sounding build? If so, do they sound like EL34's?

Guitar amp, bass amp? Hi-gain, crunch, mids hump voiced amp?

it was a clone (mostly) of one of marshall's oddest amps: the 100w jcm800 bass amp. i built it in a gutted dsl 100 chassis so the fourth preamp tube hole ended up with a second, more guitar-voiced input (i labeled it 'bright') and the two channels could be jumped like any good 4-hole marshall. this amp uses an incredible amount of global negative feedback to keep relatively clean so couldn't really comment on standard marshall "bark"

I came across this video at TGP of currently available EL34 tubes compared to vintage EL34s. Seems like a pretty thorough comparison. No KT77s, but there is a 6CA7 tube included.

I use new production Gold Lion KT77s in a bass-spec plexi clone. Same powerful mids as EL34s but with better lows and highs. There's no downsides I can tell, except the price.

I used JJ KT77's in a Vox AC100 clone build. They sounded and worked great. I'll definitely use again when these ones die.

As far as comparing them to EL34's, I'd say maybe a little cleaner and clearer with more lows and highs, but it is subtle. They are definitely closer to an EL34 sound than a 6L6 sound.
