Marshall Super Tremolo 100w Plexi - Unique Sounding Tremolo
« on: October 11, 2021, 08:27:04 am »
What does the tremolo circuit in the Super Tremolo 100w plexi amp look like?  This is a unique sounding tremolo, afaik none of the Fender designs sounds like this, the Flint doesn't have this sound, vintage Vox, Gibson, nope not there, vintage Trem Face pedal, not there either, the only thing I have heard even come remotely close is the EH Wiggler tube tremolo pedal.

Listen to the ending of Skynyrd's Ballad Of Curtis Loew and you will hear Allen Collins click in this tremolo on the last chord and let it fade away while turning the speed knob down, one of the coolest sounding tremolo recordings ever made.

It would be helpful for anyone asking a question about an amp, since there's hundreds of them out there, to post a schematic if they can.

If you scroll down to the bottom of any page on Doug's forum, there is a link to Doug's schematics library.

Is this the amp?

Yessir that's the one, 1959T.  My bad I will try and remember this in the future.

There's different kinds of tremolo circuits. And they can/do sound a little different from each other.

Also, it's where the trem is injected into the circuit that will make a difference in the trems sound.

I can't tell very much listening to the trem in the sound, too short and pretty low in volume. What I can hear does sound good, but I like trem. Really no telling if that's from a Marshall. Most studios have amps sitting around, could have been a different amp? And they did switch to Peavey's at some point.

It's a oddball job with a tube oscillator and what looks like a PNP transistor shorting part of a pot in a preamp load.

Build it and see/hear?

I tried to listen for it in the recording. It's very subtle. The tremolo at the beginning of the song is easier for me to hear and does sound pretty good. But, I can't distinguish any significant difference from other tremolos.

What I'd REALLY like to do would be to build this exact tremolo on an eyelet board and mount it piggyback above the board in my Dr. Z Maz Jr. I think the chassis has a couple of extra holes knocked in it for tube sockets, so it might be easy to add a tube.  There is a thread in this board with a gut shot of the Dr. Z.  https://el34world.com/Forum/index.php?topic=28058.0

I didn't hear anything special about the tremolo on the Ballad Of Curtis Loew. That sound at the end could have been produced by most any amp with tremolo, even solid state.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!
