Sick Dog
« on: October 16, 2021, 11:41:47 am »
I'm afraid that my friend is near the end of the line. He is 10 years old and has had health issues all of his life. He has been on phenobarbital for seizures for four years (5mg. twice daily). Phenobarbital causes liver damage. So he takes one Denamarin tablet daily for liver support. He was diagnosed with cancer last October 30. For the past year he has been taking Chlorambucil and Prednisone daily to treat his cancer. I took him to the vet Thursday for his check up. We went two  weeks ahead of schedule because he has been having reoccurring eye infections. The vet said that he has a dry eye condition that is inherent to the breed (Shih Tzu). The vet prescribed antibiotic drops and ointments for his eyes. I have a huge problem trying to get the medicine in his eyes. He has always been sensitive about his face and fights me when I try to put medicine in his eyes. If I am unable to get the medicine in his eyes, particularly the left eye, he will go blind. His lab results are due back Monday regarding his blood count and cancer treatment.
Regards,
JT

always tough, My basset (banjo) was ready, I made the appointment with the vet, let him run one last time, and God saved me the vet trip.  He died hot on a rabbit scent.

So very sorry to hear this. It's never easy with our little friends.

We lost our Golden, Rory (yes, Rory named after Gallagher LOL) ~a year back or so, cancer, out of nowhere, poof, gone. Our little Beagle, Emma is over 14, maybe 15 by now. She has slowed way down, could be any time. She's almost fully deaf now too.

I don't know if I could take getting another dog.

My heart goes out to you!  These dogs are such constant companions.

We had to put our German Shepherd down about 16 months ago during the beginning of the covid, and it was terrible -- as it always is.

My wife insisted we get another, right now, and it was a hell of a time finding the right puppy.

But we did, and I'm so glad she insisted.

It's rough. Our dog went lumpy and blind suddenly. Lymphoma, swelling everywhere, and it went in the eyes. Put those drops in!! We did, but one was scratched, infected. When we got the lymphoma slowed we drove to the other end of the state to have that eye taken out. When the lymphoma is in remission he is frisky as a pup, chases the stuffed "squirrel", a few minutes a day.

My good boy went home yesterday. For such a little guy, he brought a lot of love and joy into my life. My home is incredibly empty without him.

PRR, I wish you success with the chemo treatment for your friend. My good boy was diagnosed with aggressive forms of Lymphoma and Lymphoblastic Leukemia last October. The oncologist prescribe a daily routine of Chlorambucil and Prednisone. Her prognosis was that the drugs would put the cancer in remission for six to eight months. We made it just two weeks shy of a year. It was a good year. In the end, the medicine that bought him more time, killed him.

Doug, I am truly sorry for your loss.
Regards,
JT

Our vet had a weekly regime of several IV drugs (both people here have been on similar treatments). I did not try to understand it, but I do know lymphoma can't be cured.

In the beginning we wondered if his 'big sister', the 105 pound Great Pyrenees, was stepping on him making the back-wounds. We ordered a little denim jacket, with logo.

As well as the eye, he had major bladder stones. The vets decided on radical surgery. Took off/out all his boy-bits to shorten the pee pipe.

He's also old-man gimpy in one leg.

So what do you call a quarter-limpy half-blind emasculated pees-like-a-girl dog?
