5E3 PTs and OTs?

Hi y'all,


I hope the title didnt make you all groan....


I'm building a 5E3 fro a friend as he likes my own one that I built with an OT from Doug 16 years ago.
I cant get them anymore as Doug doesnt sell them, and even if he did, he doesn't ship the the UK where I am.

Anyway, the question is, what are the OTs worth considering at the moment that are available?
So far my list is -
Modulus(UK) based on an old Triad108
Tube Amp Doctor (Gerrmany) USA-made
Hammond 1750EP (paper bobbins)
Herboer
Mercury FTDO59 (arm and a leg, especially considering shipping and tax, and customs etc...)
MojoTone


Any thoughts on PTs as well?

The Mojotone transformer was likely made by Heyboer.  And those were likely the ones sold by Doug.

this doesn’t help outside of the US, but  I have a soursound OT in mine. It was the first amp I built that didn’t use classictone.

I haven’t played many tweed deluxes, but I really love the sound and feel of mine for what it’s worth.

I’ve bought a few Heyboer OTs from Weber (and they ship overseas). Never been disappointed.

I have a Mojo Tone Tweed Deluxe 5E3 Output Transformer 50246. I bought it directly from Mojo-Tone after Doug stopped selling them. It is a nice transformer. I always thought that the transformer was made by Heyboer. However, a look up of the EIA code of 605 printed on the transformer label corresponds to Lenco Electronics. I don't know what, if any, relation exists between Lenco and Heyboer.

In the UK too.

I recently got an AC30 OT from Trans-amp, based in Derby & am happy with it. They don't list a 5e3 set specifically on their website but might be worth getting in touch.

I've also just spec'd an AC30 PT with Transformer Equipment LTD, who are based in Kent. I don't think he's specifically a valve amp guy, but seems to know his stuff and might well have the specs for 5e3 transformers. If he doesn't, could probably still build stuff if you give him your spec.

Demeter Windings in Chelmsford got back to an inquiry I sent them last week to say that they're fully booked up 'til next year now, so they're out of the running for the time being...

that's really good informatin about Transformer Equipment. Spookily I drove past their industrial estate today while in holiday mode; I've always been slightly put off by the fact they don't seem to publish prices. Can you share whatthe 5E3 set was?

That's good to know! I was just going on his facebook page, really, as to what most of his work was in. Definitely been a good experience talking through the PT spec I was after over email, so I'm excited to get the thing into my ac30.

I was looking for a JTM45 transformer set 18 months ago. Luke was the most helpful and responsive of the UK companies I contacted.
Unfortunately Maurizio at Piemme couldn’t supply a laydown PT that would fit a standard chassis cut out, which seemed weird

I've worked out what the Hoffman-supplied transformers were, they are from New Sensor Corporation, i.e. Electro-Harmonix, who still sell the OT and choke with the same designation on their website. See attached pic for the OT and choke from my amp.
EDIT - Actually, now I've looked up the manufacturer code, 606 is Schumacher! So made by them for New Sensor?


Great to hear from others in the UK, I'll  check out those manufacturers. Shipping, VAT and import duty from the USA is significant!


My original build was inspired by a guitar mag article 21 years ago (!). They had got Majestic Transformers in Poole, Dorset, to make the PTs. So I contacted them today , and they will still make them as one-offs. Kevin there was really helpful.


I've been asked to build two Tweed Deluxes. One each for two friends and I want to make at least one of them as close to the one that inspired the first of the two of them to place an order. (The other will be a present for a son who is a professional musician so there are different considerations, so I may do some tone-tweaking).
The Majestic TF is a tall beast and puts out 280-0-280V at 125mA per winding. Almost any of the other available TFs have cores that are less tall. The height above the chassis including bell-end is 77mm, whereas a Mercury FTDP 240M is 55mm above the chassis. Might make a difference, might not!
