Anyone else like Long Necks?
« on: October 27, 2022, 11:28:50 am »
Just picked up a Gretsch 5260 baritone guitar for the collection. Anyone else play baritone?
Its taking some getting used to doing all the transposing, but getting the hang of it
Its a +29" scale which makes for a near bass like neck length
Has a couple of mini humi's which I like although they are relatively low output.
And Gretsch has added the tinyest pots imaginable.
Any though about putting CTS in with orange drops? Should I expect any improvement?

Years ago I had similar thoughts about an Ibanez I owned.  Being middle aged and headstrong, I did the deed. No improvement whatsoever.   Sounded good before, and just as good after.

Since then, my conclusion is that if a guitar pot doesn't feel right, or is not doing its job, then I replace it.  Otherwise, not worth the effort.

No one will ever know the difference between your green cappies and orange ones . . .

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Will those mini pots wear out faster? Probably.
About any modern poly cap be it red, brown, green, blue or orange
will most likely out live the player. The old paper and foil of yesteryear? That's another story.
I keep a few mini pots in stock. Some F hole arch tops just won't let you sneak in a full sized pot.
Solid state has no soul........

I have not changed a thing, and glad for it.
This Gretsch Baritone has really found a sweet spot for me
It plays great (after fine tuning the setup) and sounds even better
Been playing it thru the Weekender (four octal tube PP design, 3 dual triodes and 6X5 rectifier)
https://stillampd.com/weekender
Really is perfect as is, Mahogany body and mini Gretsch hummers work really well
And the ~30" scale is way way out there. So good.

Check this guy out:
Deep: The Baritone Sessions Vol. 2 — Mark Lettieri

I first heard of him in this band:
THE FEARLESS FLYERS /// Introducing the Fearless Flyers (Live at Madison Square Garden) - YouTube

The sound of his guitar in the video made me look deeper

oh man that is some great bari work (and the bass guys in both are incredible) I did not know these guys.
The guy in the fearless middle is playing baritone (is that Mark Lettieri?)

The video of Lettieri is featured as baritone (a Danelectro)

I love both of those recordings so much, such a groove, thanks for sharing Silvergun .

My decision was between the dani Lettieri is playing and the gretsch 5260
Since I had just scored a dani 59x12 with humbucker lipsticks and p90 (awesome 12)
I thought to go gretsch. The mahogany body is amazing (although heavy)
With the mini hummers it has such a rich sound, and great sustain. I do wish the pickups had a body adjustment (only the poles), but it has not limited the setup.
Have played it home and live for couple of months now so getting the feel
Even though its a guitar, to me its almost like playing a different instrument because of the super long scale and tuning. So fun.

The sound of his guitar in the video made me look deeper

BTW - as you look "deeper" the album in the link you sent is DEEP: THE BARITONE SESSIONS, VOL.2
