terminal strip concerns
« on: August 29, 2023, 01:58:17 pm »
i plan to use these strips instead of a board on a preamp build. I know folks use these all the time but the clearance between the terminal and chassis is a only a few mm. Any chance or arcing? What do folks do use spacers on these things?

Mount directly to the chassis.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Use them all the time. No problems. Don’t forget that the one in the picture the end terminals are grounded

I recently bought a handful of these from CEDist, and like like them a lot.

You have more flexibility, and they make more efficient use of space. I find that the grounded lugs on the style above is a hindrance. If I use them at all, I end up Isolating them from the chassis so I can control my grounding layout.

Nice work!
the terminal blocks however... can't zoom well enough but if they have "sharp" corners, kinda like a "home-plate" shape, they will cut into wire.  the others posted before are rounded tops, no sharp corners.  I pitched all the plate shaped ones years back

I use the same ones Sluckey posted and I mount them right to the chassis. No issues with my last 2 builds in 1U rackmount chassis.

aint risking it. clearance from the plate terminal to the chassis is less than 1/32". gonna use spacers to lift it higher. terminal strip crisis averted

I've added nice finished pieces of wood like cherry for functional artistic. round edges, ~~20% over Tstrip footprint.

looking at the chart, appears you need 50 to 80Kv at 14psi to jump an arc;
 what I don't see n keep missing(?) is distance on the chart, going back for a 3rd read/look  :think1:

EDIT, FOUND: This is 327 V in air at standard atmospheric pressure at a distance of 7.5 μm.

I use those terminal strips all the time for my builds.  If I don't want to use the end lugs for grounding, which is most of the time, I cut off those terminals right above the terminal board.  That gets them out of the way, and you won't accidentally try to use one for parts mounting.

I hope the OP won't mind me butting in on this thread, but feel it's quite closely related and might be an interesting extra bit of terminal strip information for people chancing on this thread later on, too.

Would the strips of the type in the original post be suitable for use as the star ground? Wondering this as they could be quite handy for SS bridge rectifiers - most layouts are made around valve rectifier setups and I've been looking at options for a neat way to integrate a FWB in my upcoming build and these could do the job... 🤔
