5879 in a combo?
« on: January 16, 2024, 04:30:44 pm »
Anyone done this?  I've tried an EF86 in the past, no go because of microphonics so I'm wondering if the 5879 would be better.

A friend has build a Gibson Les Paul GA40 that uses 5879 tube

https://el34world.com/charts/Schematics/files/Gibson/Gibson_ga40.pdf

However the use of anti vibration socket is highly recommended

I've used a 5879 numerous times in a combo preamp.  HoSo56 & the Minimalist and the D'Mars and Carolina Overdrive Special are good examples. There are schematics for those here:

HoSo56 minimalist (el34world.com)

HoSo56 amp (el34world.com)

D'Mars OD Special (Hoffman) (el34world.com)

D'Mars 5879 ODS & FX (el34world.com)

Carolina Overdrive Special 5879 plus (el34world.com)

I can't seem to access the schematics as my browser (Safari) either says there's no app if I can download or "404 attachment not found" if I can't.

Some of those links may not work. But enough of them do that you shouldn't have a problem seeing a schematic for each of them.

You'll need ExpressSCH which is a free download to open those schematics. That's what many if not most of us use to draw schematics up.

If you're using an Apple product, you may need to switch to PC instead.

Thank you, I've found a few schematics I can open and this is almost exactly what I was pondering.  Hmmm, but the move to a PC is not something I'm pondering.  ;-)

I use a Mac.  JSchem will open .SCH files, never used it for editing.  I use DIYLC for the Mac.

I've also had good luck using the 6SJ7 pentode, it's fairly quiet with a couple of damper rings on it.
