6V6 triode cool tone !!!!

While Linda is gone get me some beer, Id like to share a trio experience with you.  By mistake, I had  connected the screen and plate together, in aSE amp.
The layout was so messy in there that I hadn't noticed it.
The tone of the amp was so good that I decided to draw the circuit. Then I realized the screen grid dedicated resistor and capacitor weren't connected....


So, I rewired the 6V6 as a pentode...with poor results: lack of definition, harsh sounding...before getting back to triode.


Has anyone noticed like me how good could
a triode sound ?

In short, YES.

In fact, the data sheets for many of the common pentode & beam power tubes have operating data and curve families for triode mode.

One man's "harsh" is another man's "definition."

To my ear, triode-mode sounds dark & dull for output tubes.  I don't like it, and always use pentode-mode instead.

May be on your circuit there were other things like a load that wasn't so good for the Pentode but is good for the triode connection ?

Maybe it depends of the rest of the circuit.
I have built a clone of the Fender showman (pentode) and it sounds amazing. A  single ended is way different than a PP though.
For now, I learned that a SE in triode mode sounds good and it's worth putting a switch to toggle between both options  to select the tone we're after. Thanks amigos

for clean amps I like it, audio also, when you want to plug a 4W SE into a Marshall stack, beat the amp within seconds of it's life, through a wimpy OT playing some Jimi, tri-mode just doesn't work

Single end triode coupled to full range driver is a whole nuther audiophile affliction.
