Deluxe Reverb build with the Tone Stack off the board
« on: February 17, 2024, 08:32:24 pm »
I am planning to build a Deluxe Reverb AB763.  I found some info on Rob Robinette's site that showed a layout of the tone stack built on the pots and a tag strip.  I thought that it was a good idea that allowed for short leads between the pots and components while gaining some space on the main board.  I just started a layout and thought that I would post it for feedback.  Also, I am planning to replace the tremolo oscillator with Sluckey's Trem-o-nator.  Any comments and suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi MSV,
Done it many times. I've kept it fairly compact and you are right to use quality shielded audio cable/Coax.
(Even done it with James stacks) No instability :icon_biggrin:

I did the same with my PeeWee amp.

A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Mark,

I do this as well. I use a dual ganged pot but scrape the carbon off the top pot  at each end and the wiper creating a 3 tag terminal strip.

Unusual but neat idea! I like it. Could be trouble for someone else later on.   :icon_biggrin:

  • If I can't fix it I'll fix it so it can't be fixed

Clever it is.. though I agree this could be more than a little confusing for some future technician.

One possible alternative is to solder a 3-pos strip directly to the case of the pot. You get your 3 terminals, and it's less costly and confusing.

(I'm also a fan of replacing FP-style cans by bending a terminal over and soldering the foot of a term strip to it. Gives you a place to mount new caps and the ground lugs on the can are still available.)

Thanks everyone for the feedback.  I also like the alternatives for mounting the components, but I don't know what a FP-style can is. :dontknow:

here so you can see one  FP is a letter designation Mallory used to identify its metal can capacitors  https://hallmanlabs.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Mallory_FP-WP_Series_capacitors_1985.pdf

Got it!  I had never heard the 'FP' reference for a cap can.  Thank you!
