J D Souther has past.
« on: September 18, 2024, 05:04:59 pm »
He was a 'real' writer. Co-wrote several songs with the Eagles, co-wrote Her Town Too with James Taylor.

But this is what I loved the best;

i=2W8AOPDTu8vrItuw

[Verse 1]
Faithless love like a river flows
Raindrops falling on a broken rose
Down in some valley where nobody goes
And the night blows in like the cold dark wind
Faithless love like a river flows

[Verse 2]
Faithless love, where did I go wrong?
Was it telling stories in a heartbreak song
Where nobody's right and nobody was wrong?
Faithless love will find you and the misery entwine you
Faithless love, where did I go wrong?

[Bridge]
Well, I guess I'm standing in the hall of broken dreams
That's the way it sometimes goes
Whenever a new love never turns out like it seems
I guess the feeling comes and goes

[Verse 3]
Faithless love like a river flows
Like raindrops falling on a broken rose
Down in some valley where nobody goes
Faithless love has found me, thrown its chilly arms around me
Faithless love like a river flows

And this;

i=AptzAnay_AHn9Kxx

[Verse 1]
I don't want you to hold me tight
'Til you're mine to hold
And I don't even want you to stay all night
Just until the moon turns cold

[Chorus 1]
All I need is, black roses, white rhythm and blues
And somebody who cares when you lose
Black roses, white rhythm and blues

[Verse 2]
You say that somebody really loves you
You'd find her if you just knew how
But honey, everyone in the whole wide world
Is probably asleep by now

[Chorus 2]
And they're dreaming of, black roses, white rhythm and blues
And somebody, who cares when you lose
Black roses, white rhythm and blues

[Bridge]
Close your eyes
Sleep away all your blues
I've done everything but lie
Now I don't know what else I can do

[Verse 3]
Ah, the night time sighs and I hear myself
But the words just stick in my throat
Would you think that somebody like me
Might hurt much more than it shows

[Chorus 3]
Just send me, black roses, white rhythm and blues
And somebody, who cares when you lose
Black roses, white rhythm and blues

[Outro]
(Black roses), white rhythm and blues
(Black roses), white rhythm and blues.....

Linda did an awesome cover of it which I actually heard first before JD

JD was a great example of an artist who's influence went beyond his fame. I too was introduced to his music through Linda R and also followed his music with his band with Richie Furay and Chris Hillman. He was an integral part of that great era that produced the type of country music that only a few musicians are now returning to.

And he could write a melody!

Where's the melody in songs now?

It's the melody that the supports the words. That's a song smith.

Not to be found in most popular music. Fortunately we have relatively unknown musicians and bands that are producing great music, its just not to be found on mainstream radio or popular streams. In my neck of the woods its found in small clubs and concert halls, and on a great radio show that Maine Public Radio produces. Today's popular music is way overrated and unpopular music is way underrated.

Here's the Linda version I heard first
I believe that JD is signing harmony in the chorus section?
