Mic for vocals with Apple
« on: December 28, 2009, 02:26:32 pm »
My daughter has an Apple laptop with Garageband on it.  She already has recorded a couple of multi-track vocal pieces which sound amazingly good given the internal microphone.

Is there a reasonably priced microphone which she could use for recording?

I don't want to get into a preamp, etc.  She is a bit of a Luddite.

There must be a decent USB LD condenser for cheap.

But anything will be better than the internal mic.
I will be swift.  And merciful.

I've had good results with Audio Technica mikes, they seem to have a decent rep. And Ditto to the above- anything is better than the built in mike.
This problem calls for a bigger hammer!

MXL 990 USB.  decent condenser mic. , $80 @ MF,  sounds good with vocals,  or amps.  there is a stereo unit and a mono unit.  I set a friend up with a mono unit and Apple/garageband.  works good.  you'll need to show her how to select the device and then change the gain under the  'System Prefs->Sound->Input'.

Well, I'd decided on the Blue Snowball but when we got to Apple Store she declared that it was too big to travel with.  The Blue Snowflake is a USB condenser mic and she loves it!  Only $54 with a friend's Apple employee discount.

FWIW the Snowball is really cool in that it can be cardioid or omnidirectional.  The frequency response is actually a bit less than the Snowflake but I'm betting the sound is better.

Just thought you all might be interested in the outcome of my search.
