5F6A Project Advice
« on: April 20, 2010, 12:05:13 pm »
A friend of mine has a '59 Bassman reissue for which he purchased a Hoffman 5F6A Board Kit some years back.  (The board actually says 'Serial #002' on it - though I'm not exactly sure what that indicates- maybe they all say that?).  The kit has all of the pots wires and stuff with which it is supposed to arrive.  When I suggested dismantiling his Bassman and slapping it in there he balked and said that he had decided that he liked the amp as it was and no longer wanted to mod it.
I then suggested that we build another amp utilizing the board from scratch, which is exactly what he was thinking of doing.  So - the question is, what can we build with the board?  I'm pretty sure we could build another bassman, but is that the best or only option?  (Besides, he's already got one.)  Just looking for recommendations/limitations.  Can a gain stage be added?  If the eventual amp has Bassman dna, can we make it kick a little more ass?

Thanks!

You may use the board for a Plexi 50 build. Check Doug's library:

Just wondering... who did he buy the board from? Is there a company name on it?

But yeah, the Bassman is a Bassman. Or a JTM45 with some slightly different parts values (mainly in later versions).

Thinking some more, EL34's have a different sound, and a master volume is just a mtter of running wires from the pot(s) to the board. The screen resistors could be raised, and the bis supply might have to be reorked depending on whether you have a bias tap on your PT (the original bias supply assumes you do).

I believe he said that he got it from Hoffman.  I'll see if I can get a picture of the board.
