Carolina Overdrive Special demo

DaGeezer and I have been communicating off forum for a number of weeks trading ideas on how to get an amp that will do BOTH the clean tone AND the overdrive stuff where the notes "bloom", sustain with nice harmonics ...... etc........etc.....

Not very good playing & the recording does not do justice to the overdrive channel but it does show contrast between the clean & OD.

Same amp, speaker and guitar.  No effects pedals used at all.  The OD channel has a 12AX7 triode into a 5879 pentode.

I like the overdrive alot! The blooming effect is somewhat lost in the recording process but you can hear some of it on the recording between 2:27 - 2:37.
 :wink:

I had the VVR cranked down to only about "3.5" (1-10 scale) so the actual volume was rather mild - moderate.

NOTE:  a window may pop up asking if you want to close the link ........ just click "NO" if you want to listen

Damn! Jeff & Jeff seem to be quite a team when it comes to designing amp circuits. :grin:  I really like the clean tone, but LOVE the overdrive.  What speaker/cab was that?

Cheers,

Chip

Sweet overdrive sound man. Maybe not quite D_mble smooth but smoother--and hence more versatile than the 'wreck grind. The 12AX7->5879 sounded like a great combination. I tried to get the same OD section to run with a 6U8 triode to Pentode--not in the same league or as sweet or musical as that 5879. Keep it comin'--you guys are the inspiration to many of us weekend doodlers. Regards

^ Yeah, those soundclick.com links usually send me to the default page for that site.  I've got Firefox set to allow popups for that URL, I have the Adblock disabled for that URL, and it still doesn't work.  I don't know what the problem is.  And if I try to search on that site for the song number that is embedded in the link, it says it can't find anything. :dontknow: :confused2:

No worries, I don't know if others share the same opinion, but I have been messing with the TOS for hours  :laugh: and it seems that the amp sounds better with backing tracks, it really cuts through the mix and sits well with other instruments, but playing by itself (could be just my lack-luster playing :icon_biggrin:), it is not as "impressive out of the box" with some other amps, e.g., Trainwreck (clone), etc., which to my ears, has more harmonics and bloom. I think it may have something to do with my high B+ on the TOS - too much headroom perhaps, back to tweaking...

Trainwreck is some pretty awesome competition for the TOS.

Are you using the 5E3 tone stack on the TOS or a more traditional Dumblish style?

I'm using your schematic => http://www.el34world.com/Forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=11455.0;attach=29216

I changed some of the tubes (since I don't have 12AY7 or 5751), so now it is 5965->12AX7->5879->12AV7->5881, I tried to keep the gain levels as close to your design as possible, but still I doubt it sounds the same way as the original... Anyway, it does the clean much much better than the TW Express, and with some more tweaking, I think I can get the OD to get pretty close to the TW as well. Thanks again for this great design!

Jaz
