EZ81 in classic Fender amps
« on: March 29, 2012, 11:58:04 am »
Has someone tried EZ81 tube rectifiers in the famous  Fender amps
like Champ, Princeton, Tweed deluxe etc.

Do you think that would change the sound?

One question on my mind, what is the effect of using 5 v on the filaments rather than 6.3 volts.

It won't heat it properly and won't work right, if at all or maybe even kill the tube.

A quick check of specs for the EZ81, indicates filament voltage is 6.3 v not 5v.That's why I'm was asking it. I have a PT where is not 5V secondary.

I think that if the EZ81 has the voltage and current rating that can be compared with the tube you use it to substitute, the principal difference to consider is the resistance of the tube and so the drop of voltage it will induce on B+

As far as I can know, the different sag effect that a different rectifier can induce in SE amp will not be of great concern

in an SE amp you can also try to use SS rectify and that will give not very much difference IMHO

Yes, SS rectifier is of course an option especially if you are aiming to a clean sound.
