A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Hi guys, I can kinda side with stratele52, I am a "BUILDER" by trade and to get this title I had to do a four year apprenticeship, work on the tools a minimum of four years, do a basic building and management course at college. I then had to establish at Company to be able to build houses for payment. After being in the building business for 34y I can call myself a "QUALLIFIED" builder with experience in all aspect of building and construction.

It wasn't always as involved as this to be call a builder, you only had to have a claw hammer hanging off your belt to be one, and this was getting people hurt (physically and financially) a building authority was formed to regulate the above minimum requirements.

As much as this was a pain to get these requirements, the big picture is that I have a ticket that protects MY job.

I have been in this great forum now for four and a half years and have learnt lots and put together amps that work well(thanks to all)
But I can't call myself a "TECH" cause I don't have a piece of paper that supports my qualifications.

I have been asked why I don't I repair, build and sell amps, the bottom line is I CAN"T in my own conscience do this if I don't believe I fully understand there workings (theory and technical stuff)

If you ask, what I thought was wrong with the picture. Its CHUCK thats the idiot, I'm pretty much a computer challenged being but I would have researched repairs to vintage amps before putting into the hands of a so called TECH that in this case was going to kill me or at worse charge me a small fortune for what could be a just minor repair. Thanks

Hey Willabe, I was under the impression that Chuck was short for Charles. Tomarto (how we say it)  is short for tomato and what eves is short for what ever.

Too TECHnical for you... :l2:

Yes, Chuck is short for Charles around the world, but I'm lost, where did anyone named Charles come into the thread?

I must have missed it, I'm sorry.    :BangHead:

Tim,
Chuck was just a customer that took an amp to a repairman.
You may have well sent your mom to the repairman with the amp.

Charles had no idea the guy did not know what he was doing and has no idea what it takes to fix an amp.

Happens all the time in the world of repair, not just amps

I do not mean to disagree with anyone, but doesn't everyone realize the original reason for the post was not to talk about a qualifying certificate for anything.

I have more Degrees than a thermometer and tons of certificates that say I can do many things.  I have a degree in power generation and it is still valid.  Have not done anything with it since school and do not remember much of it at all.  I have a certificate that says I know I have learned some information.

If hired, I would be one of those guys the ones with experience would have to teach, but since I have a diploma I would get paid well.  Maybe it is a benefit for some governments to control things.

The post was simply showing a poor misrepresented job and to say that someone with a certificate will do a better job because they went to school does not take into consideration that just because you went to some school means you will do a good job.  Sure it means you have passed a test.  Everyone passes test to get a Drivers License.  Does that mean everyone does a good job driving?

Pretty interesting discussion! Where I live, most people don't seem to care what tag you call yourself, when they need amp help are just wanting a commitment from you to take it on. My policy is if I see it's over my head, they get it back with no charge.

On the vintage amp with all the paper caps, I let them know if you want to make a player amp,  replace all the papers with new good quality caps but on the other hand, if your selling to make a profit, leave all the original caps in place. All original seems to be an important "buzzword" in selling vintage. Platefire

The post got off course with people arguing that you need some sort of degree to work on vintage amps.
Bottom line for me is that you don't need some sort of degree to work on vintage amps

The original post was about some amp tech that let a guy out of his shop with 50+ year old electrolytics in the amp and told him it was good to go.

The customer on facebook (Charles) has since found a mucho qualified amp tech in south florida (Larry Rodgers) to go over the amp and do a proper job on it
And no Larry does not have a degree and Larry will service the amp properly

Hey EL, I agree that a piece of paper doesn't make you a good at what you do, experience does but a piece to paper might just keep you out of jail, well here in OZ anyway.  :icon_biggrin:

But I can't agree that the customer Charles was the idiot

Charles is just a guy that knows nothing about amps and took his amp to a guy that he thought would do him right.

All of us have been at the mercy of some sort of repairman
Examples of that might be HVAC repair people, Auto mechanics, Contactors, etc

Timbo, I appreciate what you contribute and you attitude.  I meant no disrespect to you.  I applaud anyone who applies themselves to learn and apply a new task and learning.  Character cannot be seen from a piece of paper.
