Doug's 5F6A Bassman Build
« on: April 17, 2016, 12:27:56 pm »
Got a question.  I've got the 5F6A started, but I'm currently just trying to attach the transformers etc.  I'm not having luck finding information on this, but it seems the OT I have doesn't match any holes on the chassis.  Is it bigger than what would have originally gone on this build normally?  (I just ordered the entire thing from the site here).  It seems I'll have to drill something.  Which would be better to drill, the feet of the transformer or the chassis?  (If I do the chassis it may be really hard as it's already almost at the edges and there'd be partial drill hole overlap).

Which chassis and which iron set?

Can you post a pic showing the iron set sitting on the chassis?

I'll get a pic when I get home, it's the default ot for the default chassis when you select Doug's complete parts list.

Here are the pics, one showing the one side lined up, the other showing it not, and then a side shot

you need this part: 022855

the part you bought is a "universal" 40W with 2/4/8ohm secondaries. doug sells the 022855 part.

if you want 2/4/8 ohm secondaries with the original fender footprint buy the hammond 1760K or classictone 40-18000 - the clssictone is 1/16" narrower on the width centers, but should still fit without any hacking.

I guess I'll need to talk to Doug, I'm pretty sure I just accepted the default transformer, but maybe I didn't.

Yeah I just confirmed by looking at the parts list, it has the transformer I ordered instead of the other, maybe Doug's thinking people will prefer the optional output impedances?  I can likely just adjust the location of the holes for the transformer to make it fit.  I'll double check with him.

rotate it 90deg and it'll fit. of course new holes will need to be machined. check clearances first.

I thin think it will fit, I'll just have to drill new hooks in the feet of the OT,   but if not, I'll do that.

It's not the stock 2 ohm only tranny

It's multi tap and larger

You will have to drill mounting holes

I would just use a round file to elongate the holes in the chassis.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Oh excellent idea... lots less painful than trying to get a drill into the side of an existing hole ;)

I was thinking of my dremel as well, but don't know if I have a small bit that size that's a mill type.

Sorry I know this isn't specifically an 'amp' question, but I'd hoped people had some experience with the 'fab' side of the chassis and had ideas here.  Thanks so much!

If you don't have such a file, look in the chain saw section at Lowes.

I have one, but it's also pretty small diameter, so I may have to get one that's more appropriate.

Thanks,

perhaps you can drill new holes in the footplate of the OT rather than hack the chassis up?

It's true.  The chainsaw, when you sharpen them, need a round file ;)

I get that, got lots of them, and chainsaws, I just had a *visual* image pop in of you using a chainsaw to elongate the holes :icon_biggrin:

PRR recommended I get a hand held saber saw as a flexible all purpose tool.
Great recommendation, by the way.   :worthy1:

If the little metal blade will fit in the current holes,
you could also use that to elongate the holes.   :icon_biggrin:
